LaVerne M. Kapaun, 86 of Arthur, ND died Wednesday, April 8, 2009 at the Arthur Good Samaritan Center in Arthur. LaVerne M. Kapaun was born June 7, 1922 at Estevan, Saskatchewan, Canada. She lived with her parents, the late Rose Ellenora and Rudolph Kapaun at Stirum, ND until 1936 when they moved to rural Detroit Lakes, MN. LaVerne graduated from Frazee High School in 1940. She then attended business college at Warren, MN. She worked as a secretary in Minneapolis, as a telephone operator in Detroit Lakes, and as a supervisor at the Glolite-Noma Corporation in Chicago, Illinois. During World War II, she enlisted in the U.S. Navy WAVES and served in New York City, Washington, D.C. and Arlington, Virginia. After her discharge from the Navy in 1946, she was employed in Holyoke, Massachusetts. In 1947 she came to Fargo and worked for several companies as an office worker. From 1951-1955, she worked as a nurses aide at St. John?s Hospital. She began working for Dakota Clinic in 1955 and retired in July of 1989 after working there in four different departments, for a total of 32 ? years. LaVerne then worked as a volunteer at St. Paul?s Newman Center in Fargo and the Animal Health Clinic. LaVerne was very fond of animals, especially dogs. In 1989, as a retirement gift, she flew in a hot air balloon along with 400 hot air balloons at the International Hot Air Balloon Fiesta in Albuquerque, New Mexico. LaVerne was an avid woodcarver and during the 1960's belonged to the National Woodcarvers Association. She has been a resident of the Arthur Good Samaritan Center since 2005. She was preceded in death by her parents. LaVerne is survived by her cousins. Visitation: Monday, April 13 from 10-11 am at St. Joseph?s Catholic Church, Moorhead. Funeral Mass: Monday, April 13 at 11:00 am at St. Joseph?s Catholic Church, Moorhead. Interment: Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery, Frazee, MN. Arrangements entrusted to Boulger Funeral Home, Fargo.
