Leon “Chip” Hoeg, 75, Fargo, passed away on Saturday, January 21, 2023, at home surrounded by family under the care of Hospice of the Red River Valley.
Chip Hoeg was born on March 2, 1947, in Yankton, SD. The only child to Jorgen Hoeg and Irma (Rasmussen) Hoeg.
Chip graduated in 1965 from Wakonda High School. He went on to earn a Bachler’s Degree in Medical Technology from South Dakota State University. Chip later earned an advanced degree as a Blood Bank Specialist from War Memorial Blood Bank in Minneapolis, MN. He worked for hospitals in Rapid City, SD, St. Paul, MN, Bismarck, ND, Fort Yates, ND, and retired in 2014 from Essentia Hospital in Fargo, ND.
On June 10, 1967, Chip married his childhood sweetheart, Diane Devine in Wakonda, SD. Together they raised four boys, Travis, Jesse, Adam, and Lucas, in Bismarck, ND. In 2002 Chip and Diane moved to Fargo, ND.
Chip’s passions included music, history, astronomy, the Old West and Native American culture. He introduced his sons to camping and fishing at an early age with many trips to the Black Hills of South Dakota. During his retirement years Chip loved going on trips to historical sites with his wife. He was an avid guitar player and passed his love for music onto his sons. Chip was known by many as a modern-day Renaissance man.
Chip was very proud of his service in the United States Army. He was stationed in Germany as an officer in the military police from 1970-1973. Chip and Diane’s adventurous spirit led them on many travels throughout Europe.
Chip is survived by his wife Diane, Fargo, ND. Sons, Travis (Alison) Fargo, ND, Jesse (Naomi) Fargo ND, Adam (Gregory) Los Angeles CA, Lucas (Krista) Fargo, ND and nine grandchildren; Kade, Keaton, Zoe, Bode, Cecilia, Cameron, Kullen, Jonah, and Ryer.
Chip was preceded in death by his parents, Jorgen and Irma Hoeg.
Celebration of Life Service: 5-7:00 P.M. Saturday, January 28, 2023 at Boulger Funeral Home & Celebration of Life Center, Fargo.
A service will take place in the summer in Wakonda, SD. Service details will be announced at a later date.
Burial: St. Patrick’s Cemetery, Wakonda, SD.
Memorial donations can be made in Chip’s name to the Native American Heritage Association.

Diane, Travis, and family, so sorry to hear about Chip. I will miss him sitting at the BB games but knowing he is in a better place with JMJ, that is GOD’s Will, nothing more, nothing less, nothing else. May he rest in peace.
