LeRoy Edward Howes

LeRoy Edward Howes, age 83, of Moorhead, MN died Wednesday, October 22, 2025, at BeeHive Homes, surrounded by family, hospice, and BeeHive Home caregivers.
Born on February 11, 1942, in Lawton, ND, LeRoy was the son of Russell “Rusty” and Alma Howes. LeRoy grew up in Edmore, North Dakota, where he graduated high school and later, in 1961, answered the call to serve his country by enlisting in the United States Navy. His time in the Navy took him to the Philippines, and he proudly served during the Vietnam War before receiving an honorable discharge on November 30, 1967. He married Betty Hanson on June 29, 1970, at Concordia Lutheran Church in Edmore.
For most of his life, he resided in Edmore until recently moving to Fargo, ND to be closer to his daughters Sheila and Jennifer, and grandsons Bennett and Trevin of West Fargo, ND.
He worked for Behm’s in Devils Lake, ND, then moved to Washington where he worked for Bethlehem Steel. Ultimately, he returned to Edmore, where he worked for Farmers Union until his retirement in 2003. For several years, he helped Sampson’s during harvest by driving combine. They think of LeRoy and still refer to the 1480 as “LeRoy’s combine.”
A dedicated member of American Legion Post 193, LeRoy valued his service and the camaraderie formed with fellow veterans. LeRoy’s passions were many. He cherished the great outdoors, relishing the moments spent hunting and fishing. His yard was a testament to his green thumb, and he took pride in its beauty. He enjoyed family gatherings, where he could be found sharing jokes, dancing, and singing. He loved indulging in his favorite shows, particularly Judge Judy and classic Westerns, and found joy in the simplicity of word-find puzzles.
He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Betty; daughters Sheila and Jennifer; grandsons Bennett and Trevin, all of West Fargo; brother Dennis of Arnegard, ND; sister Marlene of Detroit Lakes, MN; as well as nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his parents; brother Duane, who passed in infancy; and sister Lou Sampson.
A memorial service for LeRoy will take place at 10:00am Friday, October 31, 2025, at Boulger Funeral Home in Fargo, ND, with visitation one hour prior. Kate Bohmer will officiate.
Burial will take place at 12:00pm at Fargo National Cemetery in rural Harwood, ND.
