Lois Bergan, 62, died on Monday, April 16, 2007, at her home in south Fargo.
Lois Yvonne Smith was born on March 31, 1945, and was the youngest child born to Wallace H. (Toots) and Marie (Alsdurf) Smith of rural Aneta, ND.
First grade for Lois was spent at Union School, rural Rolette, ND, living with her aunt and school teacher, Edith Ellingson, because Lois? mother was a tuberculosis patient at San Haven. After returning to her family home farm, she attended grades two through twelve at Sharon, graduating from Sharon High School in 1962. Lois also attended the University of North Dakota and Mayville State University.
On November 10, 1964, Lois was married to John Arnold Bergan of Sharon, ND, in Biloxi, MS where John was stationed with the U. S. Air Force. John was transferred to Brindisi, Italy, and Lois followed him there. Later they lived in San Antonio, TX until John was discharged from the military in September 1968.
John began a career with Supervalu Inc. that led them to living in West Fargo, ND, Fort Wayne, IN, Bismarck, ND, Minneapolis, MN, and Fargo, ND, where they have lived since 2002.
Sewing and quilting were Lois? passion, and many have been the recipient of her talents and generosity. She loved to sew for her grandchildren and to make colorful pieced quilts to donate to Project Linus. She was a member of Olivet Lutheran Church, American Legion Auxiliary, American Sewing Guild, and other sewing organizations.
Lois is survived by her husband, John; two sons, Commander Shawn (Sondra) Bergan, U. S. Navy of San Diego, CA, Derek (Minda) Bergan of East Wenatchee, WA; one daughter, Shannon (Scott) Lipinoga of Brooklyn Park, MN; nine grandchildren, CaSandra and Kayla Bergan of California, Riley, Drew and Emma Bergan of Washington, Corynne, Michael, Jenna, and Nicole Lipinoga of Minnesota; one sister, Donna (Ron) Lerol of Finley, ND; one sister-in-law, Donna Smith of Sharon, ND; one aunt, Margaret Boelke of Wahpeton, ND; and many nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews, and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, William (Billy) Smith and Gene Smith; one sister, Doris Marie Smith, who died in infancy.
