Maggie’s service will be livestreamed below at 2:00 pm, Thursday, April 28, 2024

Magdalena Geraldine (Maggie) was born April 23, 1956. She was adopted by John and Margaret Gross, the second of five adopted children. When you think of Maggie, you feel peace. She was always quiet, listening, smiling, never judging or a harsh word, and accepting. Despite her struggles, she has lived a full life!

John and Margaret could not have children, so they opened their arms and were accepting of any children they were given. When Maggie came to them, they knew at one time she had been very sick with fever and would have learning difficulties; they still gladly accepted. When schools didn’t think she should be there and should be in an institution, John and Margaret said ‘no.’ Maggie helped wherever she could on the farm and in the house and when she turned 18, she entered a job program in Fargo. She worked for Holiday Inn in housekeeping and laundry for 30-some years. During this time Maggie found love, and married Raymond Johnson. Raymond and Maggie both had their case workers for extra support, but they lived, worked, and spent time together enjoying married life through sickness and health.

After Raymond passed, Maggie continued living in an apartment in Fargo. She never had a drivers license but would ride the bus home to Steele, ND, or catch rides with family members or friends to Napoleon. Maggie was there for the big celebrations – holidays, weddings, anniversaries, funerals and again, always quiet, peaceful, and ever accepting.

Maggie was preceded in death by her mother, Margaret Gross; grandparents, John and Magdalena Gross and Rosalia and Jacob Schaffer; several aunts and uncles; her husband, Raymond Johnson.

She is survived her 99-year-old father, John Gross; two sisters, Rosalie (John) Long and Bonita Hughes; two brothers, Rodney (Virginia) Gross and John Gross Jr.; 10 nieces and nephews; and 17 great nieces and nephews.

Dear Maggie, you are loved and we’re so grateful to have had you in our lives.
