Born in: Hankinson, ND
Resided in: Fargo, ND

Marlys Ladwig, 83, Fargo, ND, passed away peacefully in her sleep on May 4, 2024, at Eventide Fargo.

Marlys was born on May 12, 1940, in Hankinson, ND, to Alexander and Freda Pohl. She spent her younger years on a farm outside Rosholt, SD. She lived in Bradenton, FL, with her parents and younger sister, Carole, during her high school years. Marlys graduated in 1958 from Manatee High School in Bradenton where she was a member of the drill team.

In 1959, at the age of 19, Marlys moved to Fargo to start a secretarial position with Chevrolet Motor Division/GMAC. She retired after a 30-year career. Marlys met the love of her life, Lyle Ladwig, through a mutual friend. They married September 19, 1962, at St. Mary’s Cathedral, Fargo, ND. They welcomed the births of their two children while residing in Fargo.

In 1974, the family moved into their newly built home on a farmstead outside of Walcott, ND. They raised beef cattle and commuted to Fargo for work every day. They were members of St. Maurice’s Catholic Church in Kindred, ND, for over 30 years. Sadly, Lyle passed away in 2008. Marlys then moved to West Fargo, ND. She joined Holy Cross Catholic Church and was a member until the time of her death.

Marlys was very artistic and enjoyed knitting, sewing, painting, and cross-stitching. She was a wonderful cook and prepared many delicious meals for her family. Marlys was kindhearted; a gentle person who touched the lives of all who knew her.

Marlys is survived by her son Scott (Heidi) Ladwig, of Glyndon, MN; daughter Tammy (Gary) Potter, of Walker, MN; three grandchildren: Cal Potter, of Fargo, ND; Marlysa Ladwig, of Moorhead, MN; Wyatt (Adrian) Ladwig, of Horace, ND; and sister Carole (Ron) Lick, of Rosholt, SD, and many special nephews and nieces.

Marlys was preceded in death by her loving husband Lyle, her parents, and siblings Harold (Anetis) Pohl, Eva (Delbert) Lackey, and Delmar Pohl.

Memories Timeline

Guestbook

  1. I remember when I would stay my grandmother’s farm. She was always loving, caring and supportive. I’m really going to miss her.

  2. I remember Marlys when she lived in Walcott and I lived in Kindred. When she moved to West Fargo she wanted to be sure to have a room for sewing and crafts. What a lovely and kind lady! I am sure there are many wonderful memories with Marlys!

  3. Our sincere condolences to the family, classmates, and friends of our Manatee County High School Class of 1958 Alumna.
