Funeral Mass:

Martin Michael (Mick) Flanagan, age 91, died Sunday, June 23, 2024, at Sanford Hospital. Mick was born on a farm near Nimrod, MN on January 22, 1933, to Martin (Francis) and Anna J. (Carik) Flanagan. He graduated from Sebeka High School in Sebeka, MN and worked in the mining industry in Northern Minnesota before getting drafted and served two years in the Army. After receiving an honorable discharge from the Army, Mick worked at Northwestern Bell, AT&T and Sam’s Club. Mick was united in marriage to Irene (Tootie) Winkler on October 17, 1959.

Mick was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and uncle and his life revolved around his immediate and extended family. Mick was blessed with good friends, enjoyed traveling to visit family, was an avid reader, and was a farm boy at heart, always tinkering and repairing things for his family. Mick was devoted to his pets, and you routinely saw Mick and his dog, Fluke going on walks around the block and mowing the lawn together. His infectious laugh was one of his most endearing and memorable qualities. Mick’s life was spent volunteering in service to others, and he enthusiastically supported his children’s and grandchildren’s activities. He spent many years leading Cub Scout and Boy Scout troops, volunteering on the Boy Scout Council, camping, and watching his children and grandchildren play hockey, baseball, soccer, football, wrestling and tennis. Mick was always the first to volunteer to chaperone school trips and was always early to orchestra and choir concerts. Mick volunteered in several roles for the Church of the Nativity, and in his later years Mick washed dishes at every funeral and most church events. Mick was an active member of the Knights of Columbus, served as an officer for many years, and was honored as Nativity Knight of the Month, Nativity Knight of the Year, and North Dakota Knight of the Year. Mick was very proud of his work with the Men of the Cross ministry and found personal joy and fulfillment volunteering thousands of hours assembling cross necklaces and was the first inductee in the Men of the Cross Hall of Fame.

Mick is survived by three children, Michael (Tania) Flanagan, Denise Flanagan, and Holly (Ryan) Younggren; four grandchildren, Bridey Flanagan, Lena Flanagan, Cody Younggren (Tressa Eide), and Colton Younggren; two great-grandchildren, Colt and Chloe Younggren; brothers/sisters-in-law and sisters/brothers-in-law, nieces and nephews; and great nieces and great nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, Irene Ann (Winkler) Flanagan; his parents; his siblings John Patrick (Arlene) Flanagan, Mary Ann (Ted) Kiszka, Mildred Cuyler, and Peter Flanagan.

The funeral will be at 10:00am on Friday, June 28, 2024, at Church of the Nativity, Fargo. On Thursday, June 27, 2024, a rosary will be recited by the Knights of Columbus at 5:30pm, followed by visitation at 6:00pm, and a prayer service at 7:00pm at Boulger Funeral Home. Visitation will also be held at Nativity Church on Friday one hour prior to services. Burial will be at 2:30pm at St. Bernard’s Cemetery, Oriska, ND.

In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to a charity of your choice.

Memories Timeline

Guestbook

  1. Don and sally voeller we will always cherish his friendship what a wonderful friend you should be very proud

  2. Mick was a staple of our childhood on 20th Street. If we got locked out, we’d go to Mick; needed a tool, go to Mick. He was helping out every day, even providing taxi service for our mom and dad these last weeks. Mick was an AMAZING force of light and energy. Fargo has lost a great, great man. The Such “kids”.

  3. So sorry I am unable to attend the service but know that Barb’s and my thoughts and prayers are with you. Mick left a lasting memory for us and anyone else he came in contact with. He will be missed, but always remembered.
    Jeff

  4. Mick was one of the most amazing members I have met as an active parishioner at Nativity Church for twenty-eight years. His faith guided him to Nativity everyday for morning mass including Saturdays. His smile and laugh were infectious as was his personality. As a brother Knight I like everyone who knew Mick wanted to be his friend.

  5. We have such good memories growing up across the street. Your dad mowing his yard with the dog. Always a hello or wave from across the street. I know he helped my dad with snow when it got to be too much. Thankful for the Flanagan family. Sending prayers for all of the family.

  6. Mick was a joy to work with – his friends and former co-workers at Bell and AT&T will miss him.

  7. I am so sorry that I will not be able to attend the funeral service. I have such wonderful memories of Uncle Mick (go Bison!) Uncle Mick was one of the kindest people I have ever met. I know he is so incredibly happy in heaven with Jesus. Being back with the love of his life, Irene and seeing Grandma Ann. May he enjoy eternity.
    Cousin Shannon and Dale Axtman

  8. So sorry of the sudden loss of your Dad Mick. He was the best up-beat person you could meet. Who can replace him at Nativity? “May the Angels Welcome Him to Paradise”
So fortunate to have been neighbors on 20th st years ago, and also Nativity community for many years. Peace to the whole Flanagan family.

  9. We are so saddened to hear of the loss of Mick. What an empty feeling for Nativity parish this will be. He was always so up-beat and friendly to be around. The flanagans were neighbors on 20th st years ago. He will be missed. “May the Angles Welcome Him to Paradise” Our deepest to the family.

  10. Mick’s dear Family
We are unable to be there but our thoughts, prayers and caring to you across the miles.
Mick was a wonderful brother who was an important part of our lives. Always a Family
Man, Mick blessed us with over 90 years of devotion.
God speed Mick, See you in eternity.
Your Oldest brother, Jim and Rita

  11. To the Flanagan family ,
It is hard to lose someone so unexpectedly, but always remember the many loving memories you have. “Uncle Mick” in my mind was always smiling and thinking of everyone else. He had the kindest heart. He will be missed!
Thank you for streaming the prayer service and mass as I was able to watch and be there in a way.
    Love your cousin,
    Michele Rogacki
