Mary Catherine Butler Fargo, North Dakota Mary passed away on Tuesday, May 16, 2006, at Bethany Homes in Fargo at the age of 85. Mary Riley was born on June 3, 1920, in Oakes, ND, the daughter of George and Catherine (Mahony) Riley. She grew up in this area and gradated from Oakes High School in 1938. After high school Mary attended the Ellendale NI School for 2 years of secretarial training. After receiving her secretarial certificate, she moved to Lincoln, NE where she met William Butler. Mary was united in marriage in a Catholic service to William Keith Butler on November 27, 1942, in Lincoln. She worked for the government offices in Lincoln as a secretary. Bill entered the United States Service and they moved back to Oakes, ND where Mary became a homemaker and mother. In 1956 the family moved to Fargo, ND and in 1962, when Bill was transferred, the family moved to Minneapolis, MN. They returned to Fargo in 1965 where she has lived since that time. Mary worked for several years as a hotel receptionist in the Fargo area and later did office work for the Senior Employment Program and the March of Dimes organizations. She retired at 75, but kept very active with her family and friends. Mary was a very devoted mother and took great pride in all of her children. She was also very proud of her Irish heritage. Mary is survived by her children, William Butler of Prescott, WI; Robert Butler of Wisconsin Dells, WI; Mary Jane Dodge of Laguna Hills, CA; Sarah Patricia Mahoney of San Francisco, CA; Betty Anne Butler of Fargo, ND; and Susan Flynn of Fargo, ND. Also surviving are her three grandchildren, Katie Butler, Daniel Flynn and Zoey Butler. Mary was preceded in death by her parents; and one brother, James Riley.
