Mary W. Hallquist, a beloved wife, mother, and grandmother, passed away unexpectedly on May 9, 2024, at the age of 83. Born on April 27, 1941, in Frederic, Wisconsin, to Leroy and Elna (Korting) Wyatt, Mary was the middle child of three. Mary led a life dedicated to family, education, and service.

Graduating from Luck High School in 1959, along with her future husband, Morris; they were married at Luck Lutheran Church on August 3, 1963, following Mary’s college graduation. They lived briefly in Winthrop, MN and West St. Paul before moving back to their home state of Wisconsin and living in Milwaukee and Madison respectively. In 1983 they moved to Fargo, North Dakota where they lived until their deaths (Morris, January 17, 2009).

Mary started her career as a home economics teacher with Milwaukee, WI public schools and then after obtaining a master’s degree, she moved to higher education, working at Mount Mary College and the University of Wisconsin, Madison, where she earned her Doctorate in 1981. She went on to become a respected college professor at Concordia College in Moorhead, MN. During her time at Concordia College, Mary taught a variety of courses in the Family and Nutrition Sciences Department. She also led numerous May seminars with students to Europe, Australia, Guatemala, and China.

Mary’s biggest joy was being a grandmother to Megan and Michael. She was a constant at their activities; watching them and always wanting to give them a hug afterwards. Her unique attention to details will be remembered: the thoughtful gift wrapping, pretty outfitting with jewelry, and the carefulness when making her famous Jello. She enjoyed the family cabin on West McDonald Lake; being by the water, going for boat rides, and sitting on the deck or around the campfire pointing out the Big Dipper.

A devout member of Messiah Lutheran Church in Fargo, Mary nurtured her faith alongside her commitment to academia. She liked to stay busy, contributing to funerals, apple pie making, and klub dinners at church, as well coordinating monthly luncheon meetings for Cass County retired teachers and Fargo retired teachers. Her cat, Montana, was her constant companion. Most people that knew Mary well would have heard a Montana story or seen her walking him in the apartment building.

Mary will be missed, but always remembered for how she impacted our lives individually. Please share a “Mary Story” online or write about it at the funeral.

She is survived by her son Matthew (Deborah) Hallquist, Fargo, ND; 2 grandchildren, Megan (Joseph) Weist and Michael Hallquist; cousin, Ruth (Edwin “Beau”) Crandall, Battle Lake, MN; brother, John (Elaine) Wyatt, Bangor, WI; sister, Susan (John) Erickson, Chetek, WI and numerous nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, the family prefers memorials in Mary’s honor to Messiah Lutheran Church or Nokomis Childcare (located at First Lutheran Church).

Final Resting Place: Zion Lutheran Church, Trade Lake, Wisconsin at 1pm on Saturday, June 22, 2024.

Memories Timeline

Guestbook

  1. When I saw the notice this morning a huge – OH NO – came rushing from my mouth in an out loud voice. Matt, Deb, and family my heart goes out to you all! I first met Mary at Concordia. The fun and joy that surrounded her was contagious to the rest of us. She was a dedicated and passionate believer in her God, her family, and her students. An advocate for challenging and thoughtful consideration of knowledge and intuition she was an encourager in a way that helped everyone to be more engaged. As you know, I was lucky enough to have both of you as teaching colleagues. Her energy was evident in you and your children. Mary has left a legacy. She will be missed. Many hugs as you walk through this difficult and sad time.

  2. I have fond memories of Mary at Messiah. I appreciate her support as we were beginning contemporary worship there. Sending prayers to the family.

  3. Matt, Deb and family, sorry to read the passing of your mom. Sherri and I are thinking of you all and saying a special prayer for you.

  4. Oh I’m so sorry for your family’s loss. I knew Mary from her getting her nails done for many years at Regal Nails and Polished. I really loved talking with her. She had great stories and she would always tell me how wonderful her husband was and how much she missed him. ❤️

  5. Matt and Deb, I was so very sorry to learn about your mother. She and I shared many years together at Concordia, especially in developing programs for future teachers. I could always depend on her professionalism and friendship. I also know how proud she was of you and your family. I hope to attend her service this summer and surround you with my love and prayers.

  6. I met Mary when she came to visit her cousin Ruth Crandall at Maple Lane Resort on East Battle Lake. She was always a genial and bright woman. And I appreciated her recipes that I have used for years! I mourn her passing and wish blessings for her family at this difficult time,Cindy Scott and family

  7. Mary was a very sweet and kind lady who was more of a family member to us. We’ve gotten to know her through the many sporting activities of her grandchildren as she has also become a genuine friend of my mother’s sitting together many hours and sharing stories. She will definitely be missed. My heart goes out to the Hallquist family and sending prayers for peace and comfort through this difficult time. RIP Mary. ❤️🙏🏻❤️

  8. Dear Matt and Deb,
We were greatly saddened and shocked to see of Mary’s passing. Thank you for the beautiful obituary which was such a great summation of her life. She was a great mentor to me at Concordia where she shared many innovative approaches to teaching methods. We co led 4 May Seminars to Europe which required us to do much planning together. In retirement we shared many 2 hour lunches where we discussed life and also the many achievements of her Grandchildren, Megan and Mikey. Please know that you were loved very much!! Our sincere sympathy. Prayers and thoughts go out to you. Janice and Mick Hammerstrom

  9. So sorry hear of Mary’s passing. Mary and Morris were my classmates at the Luck schools. They both were very well liked and will be missed by our classmates. Our thoughts and prayers are with them and their families.
