M. Louise Riveland, age 88, of Fargo, North Dakota, passed away peacefully on August 13, 2026, at St. Catherine’s North in Fargo, surrounded by her loving family and with the compassionate assistance of Hospice.
Louise was born on February 2, 1938, to Louis and Beatrice (Bercier) Houle. She attended high school and later married Curtis Riveland in October 1959. Louise and Curtis made their home in Grand Forks, North Dakota, before eventually settling in Fargo, where they built their life and raised their family.
Throughout her working years, Louise served as a secretary for various businesses and organizations, including Corwin Chrysler Plymouth and First Baptist Church. She was known for her dedication, kindness, and willingness to help others, qualities that carried into all aspects of her life.
Louise was a member of St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church in Fargo. She cherished time spent with her family and friends, especially playing cards and games such as Rummikub. She enjoyed visiting with those she loved, hosting holiday meals, and making memories together. She also treasured relaxing at the lake and the peaceful time spent there with family. Louise opened her house to a pair of exchange students; Ingebjorg Ryningen from Norway and Stefan Schauble from Germany.
Louise is survived by her husband, Curtis Riveland; her sons, Craig, Kevin, and Kyle; Daughters-in-law Nancy Riveland, Tina Riveland; and her grandchildren, Hannah (Ross Chapa), Clay, and Mia along with many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Louis and Beatrice Houle; her brothers, Edward, Ronald, Joseph, and Raymond; and her sisters, Nancy, Jeanette, Pauline (Jim) Prahl, Olive Mountain, and Mary Rolfes.
Visitation will be held Thursday, August 20, at 6:00 p.m. at Boulger Funeral Home, 123 10th St. S., Fargo, with a prayer service at 7:00 p.m.
Additional visitation will be held Friday, August 21, at 9:30 a.m. at St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church, 710 10th St. S., Fargo, followed by the Funeral Mass at 10:30 a.m. Burial will take place at Holy Cross Cemetery North in Fargo, located at 32nd Ave. N. and University Ave. The services will be livestreamed on the funeral home website for those unable to attend.

over the past few weeks, I’ve been thinking about Aunt Louise a lot and have always felt a deep sense of gratitude. She was such a warm, helpful and humorous person – you simply had to love her! I have so many wonderful memories of the time we spent together, even though it was some time ago. She was a rock of steadfast support during my search for my American roots. I’ll never forget that! What a loss! I can only imagine how you must be feeling. My deepest condolences to Uncle Curtis and the entire family and I wish you much strength for the days ahead! Our thoughts are with you!

Sympathies to Curtis & all the families. Louise was a wonderful, faithful woman. I delivered Meals on Wheels to both Curtis & Louise when they lived in their apt. south of St. Anthony’s Parish. They were always gracious & pleasant, always ready to buzz me in. There were others in the bldg. that rec’d meals, all nice to visit w/ especially since most were fellow parishioners, too. They recently moved to St. Catherine’s North & I never got up there to visit them.
