Celebration of Life:

Memorial Mass:

Mason James Mehring, age 63 of Fargo ND, died at Sanford Hospital in Fargo on Friday, April 24, 2026 due to complications of ALS.

Mason was born on May 14, 1962 at a hefty 3lb 7oz, two months premature in Warren, MN. He was the son of Harry and June (Nieland) Mehring. He largely grew up on the farm in Carrington, ND, and later attended North Dakota State University where he met his love, Lori Schmitz.

Mason and Lori married on September 27, 1986 in Wheaton, MN. Through 39 years of marriage they welcomed three sons into this world along with five grandkids. For Mason, his wife, children, and grandchildren, were everything.

He worked as an IT professional at several companies, ending with Nodak Mutual Insurance Company. Mason had a tremendous work ethic, to the point that he would put your cup of coffee in the dishwasher not minutes after you got up from your chair. He happily retired in June of 2025 and was relishing his plans of a long retirement with Lori at the lake, filled with family vacations to beaches of Costa Rica and Caribbean Islands.

Mason found great pride in his three boys. He and Lori brought their boys through Boy Scouts and snowboard trips, running and wrestling, lake weekends and visits to grandma and grandpa on the farm. Mason and Lori instilled the value of education and put all three through college.

Mason adored his grandkids. It was often that he and Lori had one of them for the day and they never ran out of mac and cheese. He would go to their athletics and arts events, remarking on how fun it was to watch Pinewood Derby again and also how fun the experience of going back to elementary aged wrestling tournaments was. His love of his grandkids was just so clearly shown – his final moment of strength and alertness was saved for when all of the grandkids visited just hours before his passing, giving hugs to all of them and talking about their days.

The core Mason: his boys called him Ma$e. He was at his happiest bringing out a platter of his bloody caesars at the lake. He was delighted to plan a vacation on a hot and quiet ocean beach. He never said no to a beer. He only ever wanted the best for everyone.

Until the very end, Mason observed his oft-said mantra: “if you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say anything at all.” Folks describe him as diligently kind. He was at peace and ready to meet his Lord.

Mason is survived by his wife, Lori Mehring of Fargo; sons Grant (Jenna) Mehring of Fargo, Alex Mehring of Fargo, and Cole (Emily) Mehring of Fargo; his brother Matt (Jayson) Mehring; his mother-in-law Delores Thompson; his sister-in-laws Ruth Mehring, Jane Mehring, Sona Mehring, Tammy Lopez (John McIntosh), and Becky Olson (Tim Porter); his brother-in-law Scott Schmitz (Karen Wallner); his grandchildren Nora, Leah, Mack, Griffin and Vera Mehring; and many nieces and nephews.

Mason was preceded in death by his parents, Harry and June; his brothers Monte Mehring and Mitch Mehring; his brother-in-laws Bill Lopez and Scott Olson; and his nephew Jacob Olson.

The care provided by Sanford Hospital in this journey was excellent, comfortable, and dignifying.

No gifts are necessary, but in lieu of flowers, any donations will be forwarded to organizations that were important to Mason. (Meals on Wheels, Scouting, Youth Wrestling, ALS Associations)
