Matthew Whetzel

matthew whetzel
Matthew Lawrence Whetzel, age 38, passed unexpectedly at his home in Fargo, ND, on March 4th, from COVID-19 complications. His loss was completely unexpected and we are shocked and deeply saddened. Matt was born on December 9th, 1983, to loving parents Dana and Carol (Massmann) Whetzel at United Hospital, Grand Forks, ND. Matt was the youngest of the three Whetzel boys and big brother to the only sister in the clan. Matt lived in many places in his youth, including Williston, ND; Fargo, ND; and St. Cloud, MN. Matt graduated from St. Cloud Technical High School in 2002. In his early 20s he moved and settled in the Fargo area to be closer to his siblings. Matt was a loving uncle to Dominic, Ian, Meredith, Ella, Dana, Dakota, Weslee, Charlotte, Dean, Arlo, and Felix. Matt enthusiastically sought out time to spend with his nieces and nephews who overwhelmed him with great joy, sweet memories, and a fulfilling sense of purpose. They were his entire world. Being a kid at heart, he loved doing anything they wanted whether it was a simple visit to the park, a trip to the zoo, visiting the yearly pumpkin patch, swimming, or a night at the movie theater. He cherished holiday get togethers, above all else he took great joy in giving gifts. Matt enjoyed fishing, hunting, camping, bowling, golfing, watching his favorite local bands and caring for his dog, Buddy. He also enjoyed his weekly poker and pinochle night with friends, the highly competitive cribbage games against his grandpa Don, and occasional rummy with his grandma Bea. Any activity that Matt could do with family and friends would become a new hobby that he would give his heart to just to spend more time with those he loved. Anyone who knew Matt, knew that he was incredibly kindhearted. Matt refused to do anything but enjoy life and always made others feel valued. Matt’s family and friends will miss him more than words can say. Matt will by lovingly remembered by his mother Carol and stepfather Dennis Langer; his brothers, Daniel (Tara) and Michael; sister Cassie (Cody) Beckwith; 11 nieces and nephews; grandparents Fred and Beatrice Massmann and grandfather Donald Whetzel; best friend, Mitch Skajewski and dog, Buddy. Matt was preceded in death by his father Dana, 2002; grandmother, Doreen Whetzel, 2011; his sister-in-law, Melissa Whetzel, 2020; his uncle Derek Whetzel, 2015; and his aunt, Julie Wiecks, 2019 Funeral service will be held on Friday, March 11th, at 6 pm with a one hour visitation prior at Boulger Funeral Home and Celebration of Life Center in Fargo, ND.
