Mavis Bale, daughter of Palmer (Lena) Levin, was born February 13, 1929, on a farm seven miles west of Park River, North Dakota. Mavis passed at the age of 97 on Thursday, May 21, 2026, at Sanford Health of Fargo.

Mavis was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, and friend who loved her family unconditionally. She enjoyed getting coffee with her friends, volunteering, flowers, and most of all spending time with her beloved family.

She attended Garfield County Grade School, Park River High School, Mayville College, and Jamestown College where she graduated in 1951.

She taught at many places throughout her career in education. These places included; Cass Lake, MN, Fosston, MN, Minot Public Schools, ND, Minot Catholic Schools, Eureka rural school, Minot, ND, and Sylvan Learning Center, Fargo, ND.

Mavis married Kirk Bale Jr. of Wahpeton, ND on June 23, 1956. Kirk was employed by the ND Game and Fish Department, Northwestern Sheet and Iron Works, Wahpeton, ND and the ND Highway Department. Kirk died December 17, 1992.

She was a member of Christ Lutheran Church, Minot, ND and Hope Lutheran Church, Fargo, ND.

She is survived by her children; Suzanne (Owen) Michelson (Fargo, ND), Lori Bale (Minneapolis, MN), Deborah (Brad) Gregory (Minneapolis, MN), Collin (Tanya) Bale (Reile’s Acres, ND), and Thomas (Deidre) Bale (Fargo, ND). She is also survived by her grandchildren; Kaitlin Michelson, Anna Gregory (Garrett Wells), Lauren (Cameron) Carlson, Shelby (Eric) Bucholz, Michael (Katie) Bale, Riley Wilhelm (Shelby Blair), Conner (Nyobi) Bale, Emma Bale (Kyle Borowicz), and great-grandchildren; Carter, Cade, Jaxon, and Levi.

She’s preceded in death by her husband, Kirk Bale, her parents, Palmer and Lena, her baby brother, Palmer Levin Jr., her brother, Curtis Levin (Portland, Oregon), and sisters, Marvel Setness (Andover, MN) and Rhoda Bramble (Fargo, ND.)

In lieu of flowers, the family encourages everyone to make donations to The United Way, School Supply Drive.

The funeral service will be held on Friday, May 29, 2026 at 11:00 AM at Hope Lutheran Church’s South Campus. Visitation will begin one hour prior at 10:00 AM.

Arrangements entrusted into the care of Boulger Funeral Home and Celebration of Life Center.

  9. I had the joy of meeting and working with Mavis at Sylvan Learning Center some years back. She was sweet, patient, giggly, and a positive teacher to our students. It was a bonus to discover that I worked at the same school as her daughter-in-law, Deidre!
