Mavis Oster
January 1, 1970 ~ November 8, 2009
Mavis Gee Oster was born March 9, 1924, in Moorhead, MN. She was born to Milton and Hertha Gee and they lived on their family farm in rural Minnesota. She had 4 siblings, Milton Jr., Rosalyn, Robert, and Elizabeth.
Mavis graduated from Moorhead High School in 1942. She then attended Dakota Business College to get her degree in bookkeeping. After receiving her degree she went to work at Dakota Tractor in Fargo. She met Cliff while working there.
Mavis and Cliff were married on August 4, 1946 at the First Congregational Church in Moorhead. They had 4 children, Janice, Jeannine, Rob and Jodi.
Mavis was very involved in the church; she was the wedding consultant for many years, always helped out with the Fall Bazaar, and the Harvest dinner. She was a campfire leader for both Janice and Jeannine and served on the Camp Fire Board for many years. She was also very involved with all of the kids’ school activities and attended every possible sporting event in which they participated.
For 3 years, Mavis and Cliff ran the Dairy Queen at Island Park. Mavis was known for her famous barbeques and people came from all around to have one for lunch. However, the thing she is the most famous for is her baking and candy making. Her apple and lemon meringue pies were special favorites. The kids and grandkids begged to have her make them. Some of them even got her to teach them how to make her famous pie crust. She would work for days prior to Christmas making candy for family and friends.
Later in life, she went back to work for the Minnesota Milk Producers Association. She worked as their bookkeeper for almost 15 years.
She was a doting Grandmother. She looked after several of the grandchildren over the years: Chris and Lisa so that Janice could go back to NDSU and finish college, Kristina when Jeannine worked at Daytons, and Amanda when Jodi was with Ben at UCLA for his liver transplant.
Cliff and Mavis did a lot of traveling after he retired. They went to many parts of the country, including the southeast into Florida, the southwest in Arizona and California, on a cruise to the Virgin Islands, Hawaii, and Acapulco. They were also winter visitors in Arizona for several years. They loved spending time at their home on Pelican Lake and Mavis continued to spend summers there, including this past year.
