Mavis's services will be live streamed below starting at 1:30 PM Saturday January 30, 2021.
Mavis Yvonne Sklebar, 81, passed away peacefully on January 25, 2021 at Sheyenne Crossings in West Fargo, surrounded by her loving family.
Mavis was born on February 3, 1939, to Nora and Arnold Esterby in Valley City, North Dakota. The family moved to Minot, where she attended Lincoln Elementary School and graduated from Minot High School in 1957. Mavis was the oldest of 10 siblings whom she loved.
On June 9, 1958 Mavis welcomed the birth of her daughter Cassandra (Sandy) and the two became inseparable from that moment forward. The two of them shared a love of cats and they were never without one. Mavis and Sandy moved to Fargo in 1961 and shortly after, Mavis began her 30-year career at the Fargo Veterans Administration; a job that she loved. Mavis met the love of her life, Edwin (Ed) Sklebar in 1968, and they were married on July 8, 1977. Over the years, Mavis and Ed enjoyed traveling all over the world together to warm destinations and have many amazing stories and pictures to show for it.
Mavis was a lifelong devoted member of Hope Lutheran Church where she volunteered. In 2006, she went to Jamaica on a mission trip to care for children at an orphanage; a trip she was very proud of. Mavis enjoyed many summers at the family’s lake home on Little Cormorant Lake with her husband, family, and friends; a favorite place of hers. Mavis and her granddaughter, Andrea, were very close. They enjoyed shopping and embracing their Norwegian heritage. Together they attended the Norsk Høstfest and shared a love of Rømmegrøt and Lefse, uff da!
Mavis lived a wonderful life. She was full of love, kindness, and grace; everything that is good in the world. She had a strong faith and was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, sibling, and friend.
Mavis is survived by her husband: Ed of West Fargo, daughter: Sandy (Brad), sons: Dave (Susan), Ron (Kim), and Steve, grandchildren: Andrea (Aaron), Zachary, Abby, and Jacob, brothers: David and Mike, sisters: Diane, Patty, Kathy, Karen, Candy, and Debbie.
She was preceded in death by her parents and brother Arnold.
