Melvin Miller, 81, of Fargo, North Dakota passed away on February 19, 2024 comfortably under the care of Sanford Hospice House, Fargo.

Melvin was born on March 1, 1942, in Harvey, North Dakota to August and Lydia (Schmollinger) Miller. Raised on a farm outside of Anamoose ND, Melvin developed a strong work ethic and unwavering commitment to his family.

Melvin was united in marriage to Jeanette Thomas on July 17, 1962 in Fessenden, ND. They made their home in Harvey, Minot and Donnybrook, ND until they moved to Fargo in 1966. Together they raised five children: Clint, Greg, Diane, Jodi and Skyler. Family was paramount to Melvin, and he never missed an opportunity to support his children and grandchildren in their sporting endeavors and education.

Melvin worked for many farmers, he installed flooring in Harvey and Minot, ND, he worked briefly for the Sioux Line Railroad and briefly worked in a factory in
Chicago. On his way home from Chicago, he stopped in Fargo due to a snowstorm. He started working for the City of Fargo Water Department Mains and Hydrants January 24, 1966, he continued his employment with the Filtration Department and the Sludge Plant. Melvin retired after 39 years of employment on April 8, 2005. Melvin also worked for the American Legion and Five Spot over the years as a bouncer and bartender. Melvin and Jeanette cleaned many commercial buildings and churches over the years. They retired from cleaning in March of 2023.

Melvin enjoyed the outdoors and enjoyed hunting with his sons and grandsons. He enjoyed bowling, fast-pitch softball, wrestling, boxing, polka & waltz music and auction sales. He coached baseball and hockey. He helped transport many kids to their hockey games. He was a kind and generous soul, always willing to lend a helping hand and known for his selfless nature – he would give the shirt off his back if someone needed it. The memory of Melvin’s warmth, kindness, and spirit will forever live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.

Melvin is survived by his wife of 61 years, Jeanette (Thomas) Miller. His children, Clint (Missy) Miller, Greg Miller, Diane Miller, Jodi Miller and Skyler Miller. His grandchildren, Brandi Miller, Chris (Michelle) Miller, Mitchell Miller, Paige Sauvageau and Jeanelle Miller. His great-grandchildren, Dawson, Aubree, Sawyer, Phoenix, Cooper, Micah and Milleah. His sisters, Delores (Bill) Fleury of Snohomish, WA and Arlene (Roger) Hoffman of Billings, MT and many nieces and nephews.

Melvin was preceded in death by his parents, August and Lydia (Schmollinger) Miller; his brothers, Ervin and LeRoy Miller; and mother/father in-law Mike and Julia (Burgard) Thomas.

  4. I feel so blessed to have known Melvin most of my life . He was one of the best .. so many wonderful memories. There will be another dinner plate set for Melvin in heaven .. in gods hands .. Nancy hayen

  5. Thoughts and prayers to Melvin’s family on their loss. I worked with Melvin at the Sludge Plant and I called him Melvis, because Elvis was the king of rock n’ roll and Melvis will always be the king of the sludge plant. Rest in peace Melvin.

    Lots of memories we have shared over the years. Was just thinking of the birthday party at the Hall. That was only one of our crazy times we had. Jeanette, keep those memories in mind and mull them over from time to time, it does help when you get down thinking the what ifs. Peace and Prayers.

  13. I grew up down the street from the Millers. I didn’t know Melvin well but got the impression that he was a humble guy and not much would bother him. He just seemed cool, like a strong guy who didn’t flaunt it. He will be missed!

  14. Melvin was one of the nicest guys that I ever meet. I will miss his smile, laughter and story telling. We shared stories at John Villard’s Auctions. We had coffee and donuts. I will miss my auction buddy. My prays go out to Jeannette and Mevin’s family. May he rest in peace.
