Michael passed away on Thursday, February 29, 2024, at his home, surrounded by his loving family, under the care of Ethos Hospice, at the age of 68.

Michael D. Fjelstad was born on October 20, 1955, in Fargo, ND, the son of Oscar and Carole (Sandbeck) Fjelstad. Mike grew up in Fargo and received his education at Fargo South High School.

Following his schooling, Michael made the decision to serve his county and enlisted in the United States Air Force in 1972. For the next 20 years, he proudly served his country being stationed in the states, also in England, Iceland, areas in the middle east and in South America. He retired from his military career in 1992 in Tucson, AZ, and the family made the move back to Moorhead, MN. Mike began working for the City of Moorhead Wastewater Treatment Facility as an Instrumentation Tech until his retirement.

Michael was united in marriage to the love of his life, Marcia Hurlbut, on November 22, 1980, in Moorhead, MN. Mike and Marcia had a good life together raising their children, spending time throughout the years traveling while he was in the Air Force, and most of all just being with family. He loved grilling and sharing that at family BBQ’s, his work on classic cars including rebuilding a 1967 Cougar and also a 1966 Thunderbird. Michael was very proud of his “60th birthday present”, a grandchild born on his birthday.

Michael is survived by his loving wife of 43 years, Marcia of Fargo; his children – Michael (Sherry) Fjelstad II; Christopher Fjelstad; Melissa Fjelstad; and Matthew (Amber) Fjelstad; his 12 grandchildren and five great grandchildren. Also surviving are his brothers – Curt Flaten and Timothy Fjelstad; and many beloved nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Michael was preceded in death by his parents, Oscar Fjelstad and Carole Janisch; his stepfather, Leo Janisch; his daughter-in-law, Angel Fjelstad; his uncle and best friend, Dan Sandbeck; and his uncle, Erik Sandbeck.

The family would like to offer a very special thank you to Ethos Home Health and Hospice, who went above and beyond to make Michael and his family comfortable in his final days.

Funeral Services will be held at 2 PM Monday, March 11, 2024, at Boulger Funeral Home and Celebration of Life Center in Fargo with a visitation one hour prior.
