Michael’s service will be viewable on this page shortly before it starts.

Michael Joseph Schelske, a selfless servant to those he loved, died Nov. 12 at his home surrounded by family after a courageous battle with cancer. He was 45.

A two-time cancer survivor, he had overcome brain cancer as a boy, as well as colon cancer as an adult, to live a rich and full life, with a job, home, and his pride and joy: his family.

He was born Jan. 21, 1978, in Aberdeen, S.D., to Gary and Susan Schelske. He grew up in Redfield, S.D., where he played clarinet in the school band, earned his Ham Radio license by age 9, and loved participating in Boy Scouts, earning the rank of Eagle Scout. He graduated from Redfield High School in 1996 and studied at North Dakota State College of Science in Wahpeton, N.D.

In 2007, he met the love of his life Amber Hutton. They were married on August 15, 2009. Three years later, they welcomed their very biggest blessing: their son Isaac. Mike loved nothing more than being a father and often enjoyed father son video game nights.

He was employed by the West Fargo School District, working as a custodian at Heritage Middle School, a job that he loved.

He was known for always being willing to go the extra mile for the people in his life. One time he came to his in-laws’ rescue, when the yard of their new house had been graded and the sprinkler heads were buried in unknown locations; here came Michael, metal detector in hand. A recent announcement from Heritage Middle School noted “Mike took pride in everything he did, whether it be putting salt on the school sidewalks at 4 a.m., removing graffiti, or noticing the small things that needed to be addressed each day. Mike not only had an exceptional work ethic but a kindness that could make anyone’s day better.”

He enjoyed hunting, camping, and Cowboy Fast Draw. He was a member of the Pyrotechnics Guild International and his fascination with fireworks took him to pyrotechnic conventions around the country.

Survivors include wife, Amber, and 11-year-old son, Isaac; parents, Gary and Susan Schelske; Grandparents George and Irene Imbery; siblings Brent (Kate) Schelske, Sara (Gunnar) Olson; In-laws Dawn (Matt) Langlie, Terry (Daphne) Hutton, Adam (Katie) Hutton; and numerous uncles, aunts, nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by Grandparents Rudy and Margaret Schelske; Nephew Jackson Hutton; and Cousin Ryan Imbery.

A memorial will be held Monday, Nov. 20, at Boulger Funeral Home, 123 10th St S., Fargo. Visitation starts at 1 p.m.; the service will be held at 2 p.m. The family requests attendees to dress casually, as Michael would have wanted.

In lieu of flowers or gifts, the family asks you to consider donating to an education fund for Michael’s son. Donations can be directed to Alerus Financial 3137 32nd Ave S, Fargo ND 58103 for Isaac Schelske.

Memories Timeline

Guestbook

  1. Susan and family, sending hugs to you all! Michael holds a special place in my heart-from playing together as preschoolers to high school. I remember visiting him in the hospital when we were in Kindergarten and proudly bringing him stuff from our class. Jake and I will miss seeing him at Fleet Farm. He was so helpful in helping us find things there. I always looked forward to going there because I would often see Michael.

    • The world has lost someone who embodied kindness, perseverance, and appreciation for the good around them. What I will remember most about Michael was the positive attitude he brought into every room and his sincere and kind heart. You are all in my thoughts.

  2. Gary, Susan and Family. I wish there were words to ease your pain, and heartbreak. Please know we are thinking about you all now, and the days to come.

  3. Michael was a beautiful soul here on earth I can only imagine the welcome he received in heaven. My thoughts and prayers to all who loved him in this difficult time. May your memories and love give you peace. He will be missed

  4. Sending love and prayers to all Michael’s family at this very difficult time! Michael was so very special to all who knew and loved him.. He was so kind and thoughtful.. I enjoyed watching him grow from a little boy to the man he became!! Sending love!!💗💗💗

  5. This is really hard for me. Mike was a coworker, but we had a great friendship. I will miss him every day, because he always had a good outlook on life. I only had the privilege of knowing him for few years but we became close friends. Mike I will always consider you my friend. I hope your family knows that they have me to help them out if they need it. Love you man.

  6. So very sorry for the loss of such a fine young man. He fought so hard to live but God called him home. He is now completely healed with a resurrected body. Prayers for Amber and Isaac as you grieve and miss your husband and father. We love you. Hugs. ❤️

  7. Gary and Susan–I am so sorry to hear about Michael’s death. He has been through so much. Reading the obituary made me smile–thinking about all the things he did to help others and his dedication to his family. That was Michael–even as a young boy. I will always remember Michael being so excited and motivated to participate in Odyssey of the Mind–always had great ideas. My thoughts and prayers are with all of you now.

  8. Michael has always been and will always be my friend…I will always cherish the memories of growing up with him. My heart goes out to his family!

  9. I met Mike working at WFPS. I would go out to Heritage to help out and he always had a smile on his face, staying late to help out, and never a single complaint. We were talking one evening and he was giving me encouragement about my own cancer diagnosis, all along fighting his own, and not for the fist time. I’m a better person knowing such a good man, prayers to his family as they grieve this incredible loss.
