Miriam Ruth Hildre of Fargo, North Dakota, passed away at home surrounded by family on February 9th, 2024 at the age of 68.

Miriam Ruth Schmitt was born January 23rd, 1956 to Otto and LaVerne (Bolme) Schmitt in Gackle, North Dakota. She attended elementary school in Cando, North Dakota and high school in Northwood, Iowa, where she was active in band, choir, track, and cheerleading. She graduated from Iowa Lutheran Nursing School in Des Moines, Iowa in 1978. She moved to Fargo where she was employed at Dakota Hospital on the surgical unit. She married Scott Hildre May 16, 1981 at Richland Lutheran Church in Walcott, ND, officiated by Miriam’s father Rev. Otto Schmitt. They were married 42 years. Her career as a registered nurse was more than a profession; it was a calling and a testament to her natural disposition to be a caretaker of others. She continued as a nurse through the transitions to Champion, Heartland, and later worked at Northern Plains Surgery Center. She retired from nursing in 2018.

Miriam enjoyed the simple pleasures in life. In the summer she loved swinging on her deck with a Dr. Pepper and in the spring, when the snow started to melt, you would find her chopping ice in the street. Rarely would you see her without a smile on her face and a visor on her head. Miriam was a member of the Gateway Lions Club in which she traveled with Scott to many clubs around the Midwest and Canada. She was an avid gardener creating a beautiful landscape year after year. She would often exclaim she was headed out to play in the dirt. Miriam loved to play golf. As a natural athlete, she could drive the ball an impressive distance according to her league friends. She also always played with an orange ball so she could see it in the distance. She enjoyed doing puzzles when the weather got cooler and there was no shoveling or ice chopping to be done. She was a talented singer and music held a special place in her heart. Her greatest enjoyment came from spending time with her grandchildren and the other people she loved. She retired early so she could help caretake for her grandchildren in Grand Forks and her aging parents.

Miriam is survived by her husband, Scott Hildre; daughter, Charlotte (Shane) Riedlinger; son, Scott M Hildre; and daughter Toby (Brandon) Trontvet; grandchildren, Lucas (Mariah) Riedlinger, Brook Hildre, Jackie Ross III, Autumn (Hunter Holverson) Riedlinger, Rylee Keith, Amara Trontvet, and Graham Trontvet; great-grandchildren, Zayne Riedlinger, Acen Riedlinger, and Gunner Holverson; siblings, Terri (Roger) Olson, Tim (Sherry) Schmitt, Tom (Linda) Schmitt, Becky (Kevin) Leidal, Heidi (Jeff) Vansteenburg, Sonja (Kent) Casperson, and Margaret (Jon) Young; brother-in-law, Spencer (Mary) Hildre; sister-in-law Stephanie (David) Sateren; as well as many nieces and nephews.

Miriam was preceded in death by her father, Otto Schmitt; mother, LaVerne Schmitt (Bolme); and two nephews.

Memories Timeline

Guestbook

  1. Scott and Family: I am so sorry for your loss. Miriam was a classmate when she lived with her family in Cando ND. I always will remember her for her kindness to me; plus her dad was the pastor of the Church I went to. God Bless you in this time!

  2. We feel so fortunate to have visited Miriam shortly before her hospital stay. Her smile and laugh will always be a sweet memory. We remember your wedding, countless Lion’s events, Toby’s birth and numerous parties and picnics over the years. Scott, we’re here for you.

  3. Dear Miriam,
How I loved your ladies league group- Miriam, Susan, Jeana and Linda. You were the true definition of the beauty of the game of golf: “it’s not the score you shoot, but the people you play with and the relationships you make.” I will always think fondly of you and your group and I cherish the time we spent together at the course.
    Rest easy, dear friend.

    • Miriam, our long-term friendship created many memories across many activities that will hold a special place in my heart. Whether we gathered to cheer on the kids, help the PTA, tap dance, bowl, or golf, you brought a happy heart to everything you did and everyone you encountered. It wasn’t so long ago that we were on the greens together with our Lady Drivers team watching your orange ball soar! You were the person who encouraged me to try golf for fun and I will be forever thankful. It has brought so much enjoyment to my life. On behalf of our family, who have all loved you, Scott, and the Hildre family since our Great Beginnings days, we extend our love and thanks for the many ways you touched our lives. You finally get to “sleep in”. Rest peacefully dear friend.

  4. Laura and I were saddened to learn of Miriam’s passing . God’s peace to Scott and his family in
    Dave and Laura Langemo

    • Scott and Toby
I worked with Miriam … we had lot of laughs . She was an excellent nurse and so caring . I will miss her smile. But there are good memories . Tara

  5. Miriam, you will be missed by so many friends and family members. I will always remember our time together in Florida and on our Hildre Cousins Reunions. Scott and your family are in my prayers as they walk this next chapter together. Give all of our family in heaven a hug and kiss for me. We will meet again in heaven! Hugs and prayers, love Barbara

  6. Scott – I am so sorry to hear about Miriam passing. Prayers to her and all your family during this difficult time

  9. So Sorry for your Loss Scott and Family. I worked with Miriam at Dakota for many years and it was such a Pleasure to work with her and to know her. RIP Miriam.

  10. “Mirm” was a co-worker for many years, both at Dakota Hospital and Northern Plains Surgery. It was great to see her in my O.R. for the day, as I knew things would go well, and the atmosphere would be both loose and professional. I truly enjoyed her fellowship in the operating room and outside of there, as well. This is a huge loss, and tugs at the heart strings a lot. God Speed, Mirm!

  11. So very sorry for your loss Toby. Hope all of the wonderful memories you have will help you through the days ahead.

  12. Scott and family I am so saddened for you all that your Miriam has passed away I had fun with her this summer on the bus to the Jasper Theater with Scott too we had giggles n great lunch. She is now watching over you all as your Angel above and will send you signs. Hugs and may the Lord embrace you all through this tough time. RIP MIRIAM

  13. My condolences and prayers to Scott and the entire family. Having seen everyone recently and now realizing the loss is truly a difficult time for such a wonderful and very lovely lady. My heart goes out the entire family.

  14. I was and am still stunned by Miriam’s passing. Another reminder of how fragile our lives are. I knew Miriam(and Scott)from our church -Atonement Lutheran and Toby married the son of a friend and former co-worker of mine in Grafton. Toby and her husband had Sioux hockey tickets 2 rows in front of us at the Ralph and at times Miriam and Scott or Miriam and Sheila(Trontvet)would attend. I have fond memories of choir at church. Rest in Heavenly peace Miriam and that God’s arms are wrapped around her family on comfort and love.

  15. Miriam was a beloved member of the Northwood-Kensett Class of 1974. She will be memorialized at our 50th Class Reunion on September 7. She will be missed. I have so many fond memories of her and her fun loving spirit. Rest in Peace, Miriam.
Our thoughts, prayers and sympathy to Scott, Toby and entire family.

  16. We are deeply sorry for the loss of your beloved Miriam. She was such a wonderful human being. May she rest in eternal light and peace.

  17. Miriam, our long-term friendship created many memories across many activities that will hold a special place in my heart. It wasn’t so long ago that we were on the greens together with our “Lady Drivers” team watching your orange ball soar! You were the person who encouraged me to golf and I will be forever thankful. It has brought so much enjoyment to my life. On behalf of our family, who have all loved you, Scott, and the Hildre family since our Great Beginnings days, we extend our love and thanks for the many ways you touched our lives. After many years of early hours as a surgical nurse, You finally get to “sleep in”. Rest peacefully dear friend.

  18. Dear Scott and Family. I am so sorry for your loss and Miriam’s illness. My prayers go out to you as you find a “new normal ” without her. May your many friends and family comfort you. I am in Arizona and was not able to attend the service. However, I was able to “be there” through the miracle of U-Tube! Scott, we need to have a cup of coffee when I return! May God Bless Miriam’s memory!

  19. My deepest sympathy to all of you! Miriam’s smile and energy were contagious. I have many wonderful memories of time spent with your family in Cando. I send prayers and hugs.

  20. Scott~ I am so very sorry for the loss of your beautiful wife & best friend…How can I ever forget that ‘sparkling smile’… that would light up a room when she walked in! She was so fun to be around and was an absolute ‘hoot’ to work with at Dakota Hospital ~ 3rd floor surgical. However, the greatest thing I experienced with her was introducing her to you…. Ross’s best friend!! We had a ton of fun ‘double – dating’!! My heart breaks knowing she had to leave this world ‘too soon’ … she will be missed. I always looked forward to connecting with you both when we came home from Washington to visit in the summer…praying God wraps His loving around you Scott… as you try navigate the days ahead…much love… Ronni Hjelseth
