Muriel Sampson

muriel sampson

Muriel Geneva Sampson, 93, of Fargo, ND passed away on Saturday, June 28, 2014 at Elim Nursing Home while under the care of Hospice of the Red River Valley.

Muriel was born October 11, 1920 in rural Colfax, ND to Gilbert and Marie (Fiske) Wien. She was baptized and confirmed at Our Saviours Lutheran Church, and graduated from Colfax High School in 1939. She went on to attend Nursing School at St. Lukeʼs Hospital in Fargo and received her RN in 1943.

Immediately upon graduation she travelled to Georgia to meet her fiancee, Garfield, who had just earnedhis wings after completing advanced flight training at Dotham, Alabama. They were married May 28,1943. After 8 months of marriage Garfield was critically injured leaving him permanently disabled.

Garfield remained in hospital for a year before they returned to Colfax where with love, loyalty and determination she took on the role of caregiver, wife and mother.

They moved to Wahpeton in 1948 where she resumed her nursing career. Muriel took great pride in her work at both St. Francis Hospital in Breckenridge, MN and at the Wahpeton Clinic until retiring in 1976.

She was always taking courses to upgrade her skills and worked with a sense of intense professionalism.

Her volunteer work with public health nursing included the Red Cross Bloodmobile, Wahpeton Artery Screening Clinic and the Polio Immunization Program, all of which were a source of great satisfaction to her. She maintained her connection with St. Lukeʼs Alumni and enjoyed several reunion with classmates, the last being in 1975. As a member of Bethel Lutheran in Wahpeton, Muriel was active in many aspects of church life and was a member of Steven Ministries, as well as several study groups and guilds. She always found great comfort in Christian worship and fellowship, which continued after their move to Fargoin 1985 where they became members of Olivet Lutheran Church.

Although Muriel enjoyed many hobbies, the one overriding passion was with quilting. She was a member of the Quilters Guild of North Dakota, 3 Rivers Quilters, Town & Country Quilters, North Star Quilters, and Mall Quilters Society. She was featured in the 1996 issue of “Whoʼs Who in American Quilting”. She was always looking forward to the next trip, training seminar or convention and was always willing to share her knowledge and skills whenever the opportunity presented itself. The beauty of her creations is cherished today by her family and friends to whom she was generous with her creative gifts. Other interests  included swimming, skiing and boating with her family at their cabin on Ottertail Lake. Her love of gardening was also evident in her colorful flower beds and a pantry well stocked with home canned goods.

Muriel is survived by her children: Kathryn Wozney (Richard) of Winnipeg, MB, Jerome Sampson (Evelyn) of Fargo, and Steven Sampson (Julie) of Detroit Lakes, MN; Grandchildren: Kendra Fowler, William Wozney (Meagan), Jennifer Susag (Duncan), Jamie Pederson (Scott), John Sampson (Stephanie), Jessica Sampson, and Bianca and Mason Sampson; Great Grandchildren: John, Katherine, Sarah, Carter, Maddie, and Maiya.

Murel was preceded in death by her parents, husband and brother.

We are so sorry to hear of your Mom’s passing. She was a wonderful wife and mother and a very patient caregiver. You are all in our thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.

Oh, Muriel, how we have missed you. Our Town and Country quilters used to have great meetings and you always had the best Show ‘ n Tells for us to admire.
Unfortunately, I lost track of you several years back, but remember your good nature and smile and think of you often.
I wonder how you would accept the machine quilting movement. I can’t imagine you would send your creations “out”to be quilted. Perhaps I’m mistaken. There are some imaginative professional quilters for hire. Maybe you would be like me and a few others who just don’t quilt as much any more, whether due to laziness or lack of inspiration, I can’t say.
I know you had a wonderful life and hope quilting was a part of it as long as you were able.
