Resided in: Hillsboro, North Dakota

Muriel Janet (Pederson) Wegge, 86, passed away Tuesday, September 17, 2024 at Sanford Hospital in Hillsboro, ND. Muriel courageously battled through various illnesses over the last several years but her heart finally gave up while she lay peacefully in the care of hospital staff.

She was born in Hillsboro, ND on August 12,1938, to parents John and Hazel Pederson. Muriel graduated from Hillsboro High School in 1956 and on June 22, 1958 married the man she would live with for the next 66 years, Loren Wegge. Muriel and Loren farmed east of Buxton, ND until they moved into their current residence in Hillsboro in December of 2014. Throughout Muriel’s life, she never lived more than 20 miles from the place of her birth.

Soon after Muriel and Loren’s marriage at Our Saviors Lutheran Church in Hillsboro, the church where she was also baptized and confirmed, the couple became members of Salem Lutheran Church in rural Buxton. Muriel served as the treasurer of Salem for many years and with the exception of the last few years, remained very active in all aspects of being a ‘church lady’ in a small rural congregation in the Red River Valley of North Dakota. With a Bible and devotion book always at the side of her favorite chair, there was never a question regarding the importance of faith in her life, a foundational characteristic she instilled in her family that remains today. Muriel was an avid reader, a diehard Twins fan, solved hundreds of crossword puzzles, and played host to many, many extended holiday and family gatherings on the Wegge farm.

Muriel is survived by her loving husband Loren; daughter Lori (Mark) Bolton of Grand Blanc, MI, daughter Beth (Donn) Hanson of St. Michael, MN, son David of Buxton, ND, daughter Jodi Lochner of Duluth, MN, and son John (Krissy) of Richfield, MN; grandsons Andrew (Tara) Bolton, Josh (Rosie) Bolton, Peter (Arica) Hanson, Mathew Lochner, Sam Lochner, Peter Lochner, Austin Langdon, Dawson Langdon, granddaughter Maddie Wegge, great-granddaughters Ivy and Jade Hanson, Eleanor Bolton, great-grandson William Bolton, Muriel’s siblings Elaine Robinson, John, Neil (Jo), Sandra (Allen) Mustad, Sharon Burns, and brother-in-law Vern (Janet) Wegge.

She was preceded in death by her parents, brother Lyle, brothers-in-law Gene Robinson, Bill Burns, daughter-in-law Jennifer Wegge, and grandson Kyle Hanson.

A memorial service will be held at Our Saviors Lutheran Church in Hillsboro at 2:00pm on Saturday, October 5. A light lunch will be served following the service.

  5. Birthday parties with angel food cakes and 7 minute frosting, 10 kids getting together all in one house, Ladies Aid in the church basement, singing in church in a “stepladder.” Muriel coming over to visit Mom for coffee and Mom life commiseration. A life time of memories of such a beautiful woman who told her life’s episodes over a cup of coffee to my Mom, with laughter ringing out from the kitchen. Thanks for the memories, you’re all in my heart. Prayers for strength, love to all.

  6. Our sincere condolences on the loss of your mother. Lori, although I didn’t know your mom personally, I always remember Lorna telling me that your mom was the nicest person she ever knew. May the knowledge of knowing she is with the Lord bring you peace.
