Nellie J. Stock, 102, Moorhead Health Care Center, died Monday, February 9, 2004, in the care center.
Nellie J. Wolters was born December 26, 1901, on a farm in Ransom County near Lisbon, ND, the third of fourteen children of Jacob and Mary Wolters. She grew up on the Wolters homestead near Buttzville, ND. She attended St. Aloysius School in Lisbon and Sacred Heart Academy in Fargo. She worked at the bank in Buttzville, ND. Nell married Vern H. Stock on November 10, 1920, in St. Mary?s Church at Sheldon, ND. The couple farmed near Buttzville for five years. They purchased a hardware store in Sheldon, which they owned and operated from 1926-1931. They moved to Lisbon in 1931 and lived there until 1944 when they moved to Lakota. In 1950, they moved to Fargo, where they have since lived. Nell worked at Mandel Furs for seven years. Nell worked as a volunteer at St. Vincent dePaul?s Society for 25 years.
Her main hobbies in later life were knitting afghan robes and quilting, of which she made and sold or gave one thousand, the last of which was donated to Father Hughes of St. Mary?s Cathedral. For these accomplishments, she was interviewed and appeared on local television and nationally on CNN.
She is survived by three sons, Dr. Donald (Dorothy) Stock, Fargo, E.J. (Eugene) Stock, Las Cruces, NM, and Roger Stock, Bismarck, ND; one daughter-in-law, Fern Stock, Fargo; 26 grandchildren; 41 great grandchildren; and nine great great grandchildren; three sisters, Ida Wolters, Margaret Beaucage, and Lois Cruden, all of Lisbon; and two brothers, John (Myrtle) Wolters and Edward (Doris) Wolters, both of Lisbon.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Vern, in 1978; one daughter, Beverly Ray; one son, Kenneth; her parents; four brothers; and four sisters.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to Birth Right or St. Vincent dePaul Society.
The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Friday in St. Joseph?s Catholic Church in Moorhead, MN. Visitation will be from 1-2 p.m. Friday in the church. Burial will be in St. Joseph?s Cemetery in Moorhead.
