Nicky’s service will be livestreamed on this page shortly before it starts:

Nicolette Alaine McKay, lovingly known as Nicky, left this world on January 29, 2024, at the age of 72. She was born on February 19, 1951, in Fargo, ND to the late Milton and Catherine “June” McKay.

Nicky spent her early years in Casselton, ND before the family moved to Westport, SD. She graduated from high school in Frederick, SD in 1969. With a compassionate heart and a desire to make a difference, Nicky pursued a career in health care. She dedicated herself to the well-being of others and worked as a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) and in hospice care. Her love and care for children and the elderly were unmatched, and she went on to retire as the Pediatric Unit Secretary at Avera Hospital in Aberdeen, SD.

Returning to North Dakota, Nicky settled in West Fargo, where she resided until her passing. Alongside her professional accomplishments, Nicky cherished her family and friends above all else. Her immense generosity, kindness, and ability to make everyone feel like family will be remembered by all who knew her. Her servant-like nature was evident in her selfless acts of kindness, always ready to lend a helping hand to those in need.

Music was a constant joy in Nicky’s life, and she enjoyed playing Bingo as a form of entertainment. Nicky was known for her prowess in the kitchen baking many goodies to share with family and friends. However, her greatest source of happiness came from her family, particularly her daughter Chelsie Bormann, whom she adored along with Chelsie’s husband, Troy, whom she loved like a son. Nicky was a proud grandmother to Austin, Nathan, Blake, Bailey, and a great-grandmother to Luna. These cherished relationships brought her immense joy and fulfillment.

Nicky is survived by her daughter Chelsie (Troy) Bormann of West Fargo, four grandchildren, one great-granddaughter, her brother Terry McKay and sister-in-law Kathy McKay of Golden Valley, ND, and several beloved nieces, nephews, and cousins.

She has now joined her parents, Milton and June McKay, along with her brother Michael McKay, her sister Mary Jo McKay, her nephew Michael McKay Jr., and her grandson Grant. Although they mourn her loss, they take solace in knowing that Nicky’s love and light will forever shine in their hearts.

  1. Oh, my Nicki. How this world will miss you zest for life and your infectious laugh. As much as we miss you here, i am sure they are all loving having you there. Our lives will never be the same without out you. I am sure they were all lined up with open arms to get one of your hugs, because you hugs were the absolute best! Sending love and prayers to everyone who is feeling a void and facing the unknown of life without your beautiful soul on earth! Rest Easy my sweet “Auntie” Nicolette!

  2. Remembering Nicki and I as kids always together at each other house, I visited in Casselton, ND, after my family had moved to Jamestown. Maybe thirteen years old and we walked four blocks to buy fireworks. Walking on crutches, my legs got tired halfway back to her house. Jokingly, she stuck out her thumb to hitch a ride. The car stopped and I thought she knew the person. She opened the door and helped me in and I noticed she wasn’t getting in. I said to her, “aren’t you coming?” She said, “No! My mother said never get into a car with strangers!” I was surprised and nervous, looking out the back window at her waving goodbye. Turned out the driver knew my parents and took me safely to Nicki’s house. I can’t remember this incident without breaking out into a smile. Would love to hear your story.

  3. I remember Nicki, a nice young lady. I knew all of her family when they lived in Casselton. They were terrific people. I was a closer friend of Terry.
