Paul Quentin Laliberte died Wednesday, March 18, 2026, in Fresno, California, at age 77.

Paul was born July 1, 1948, to Leness and Mary (Heimerman) Laliberte in Fargo, North Dakota, where he was educated at St. Anthony of Padua parish school and Shanley High School (class of 1966). In 1967, he entered the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, New York, where he graduated in 1971 as a second lieutenant and began a 21-year Army career, first serving in artillery units in South Korea and Fort Lewis, Washington.

Rising through the ranks, he attended advanced officer training at Fort Knox, Kentucky, where he met Tuyet (Chris), a Vietnamese mother of two young children who had immigrated to the U.S. in 1970. Paul became a China Foreign Area Officer and in 1978 moved with Chris to Tucson, Arizona, where they married and Paul attained a master’s degree in Asian Studies at the University of Arizona.

With Paul having an instant family and a career path in focus, they moved to Hong Kong in 1979. Paul studied Mandarin Chinese for two years at a British Ministry of Defense language school and traveled throughout Asia before returning to West Point as a language professor and chief of the Chinese Language Group.

During the 1980s, Paul received command and general staff training and fulfilled executive assignments at battalion and division levels at Fort Ord, California, and as Joint Staff China/Taiwan desk officer, J5 Planning Directorate, at Pacific Command headquarters in Hawaii.

Paul retired from the Army with the rank of lieutenant colonel in 1992. He accepted a four-year civilian position at the American Institute in Taiwan, where he was primary liaison between the U.S. and Taiwanese armies. He subsequently held defense industry positions in Taipei at Raytheon and Northrop Grumman, where he was a vice president with responsibilities throughout Southeast Asia.

After 23 years of living in Taiwan, Paul retired to Fresno in 2015. Both Paul and Chris enjoyed traveling and strengthening family ties in Vietnam. In 1991, they built a second home in Chris’ hometown of Vinh Long, where they spent winters during retirement. As often as possible, Paul attended reunions with extended U.S. family members, who will miss his informed insights, thoughtful perspective, loving compassion and sardonic humor.

Paul is survived by his wife, Chris, Fresno; daughter Susan (John) Soares, Reno, Nevada; siblings Msgr. Robert Laliberte, Omaha and Fargo; Andrea (William) Lewis, Dent, Minnesota; George (Veronica) Laliberte, Topeka, Kansas; Lisa Laliberte, Fargo; Richard (Rachelle) Laliberte, Macungie, Pennsylvania; and Michael Laliberte, Fargo; and grandchild Luke Soares, Reno. Paul is preceded in death by his parents and son Claude (“Chunky”) Christopher.

A funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday, April 10, at St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church, Fargo, with visitation at the church one hour before the service. Visitation will also take place from 5 to 7 p.m. on Thursday, April 9, with a vigil to follow, at Boulger Funeral Home and Celebration of Life Center, Fargo.

Memorials are preferred to John Paul II Catholic Schools in Fargo.

Guestbook

  1. Very sorry to the Laliberte families on your loss. Thank You to Paul for his service to our country. May you Rest In God’s Heavenly Kingdom and be at Peace. God will always carry you in the Palm of his hand just like the poem “Footprints In The Sand”. With Sincerest Prayers and God’s Peace, Mark VonBank-Park Rapids, Minnesota.

  2. Condolences to the family.
We first met the Laliberte family in the early 1980s at West Point; and have remained friends ever since. The military didnt allow for regular in-person meetings but, we managed through corresponde and via this new electronic world.
Thank you Paul for your friendship, your kindness, your generosity.
Rest in peace my friend, Kim and Ramon

  3. Edem and Felicia Job
    3/30/2026.

Missing you Paul. A good man and a wonderful man who loves and cherishes our family from the first time we met you and your beautiful wife Chris through your daughter Susan and your son In-law John. You and your wife welcome us with open hands and your hearts. You fed us with kindness come rain or shine. You helped looked for our home and brought us food daily till we were able to settle in. My family loves and misses you. May your kind and gentle soul rest in perfect peace Paul.

  4. Dear Chris,
It is with great sadness that I learn of Paul’s completion of earthly life. I remember him so well as that fine example of America’s best soldiers in stature, character, and nobility. He and I were classmates at the United States Military Academy in the Class of 1971. His keen intellect, wit, and attention to duty well-performed helped mold his noble character. Most of all, he was a friend who could be trusted to choose that which was right and just. Chris, I have a nice photo taken in 1971, as Paul, Ron Musser, and I served on cadre of New Cadet Barracks (“Beast Barracks”). We are in uniform and standing right outside our cadet barracks. I can still see his friendly and smiling face. If you will send me a text number or email address, I would be happy to send you that fine picture. My email is confed@windstream.net May God bless you and your family with His comfort and Peace. May our gracious Lord Jesus dry some of your tears in His own time. It can be said of Paul, “Well done, be thou at peace”.
    With deepest respect, I remain,
    Jim

  5. Mary Margaret Mooney, PBVM PBVM says:

Although I have not seen Paul for years, I recognize his quirky smile in the obituary photo. May he rest in peace. My prayers and sympathy are with his family. May they find comfort in their memories and consolation in their faith.

  6. I knew Paul as a senior in high school at Shanley. We sat next to each other in Comparative Arts. As a student new to Shanley (and Fargo) as a senior, Paul was kind, very smart and surprisingly funny. Although I knew him in one class during one school year, I remembered him well and was so sorry to hear of his death. I see he carried the same traits I noticed throughout his life. My sympathy to his family and his many friends.

  7. Dear Chris and Laliberte family,
I was fortunate enough to have Paul as my first roommate (along with Dave Duke) when we were originally assigned to company C-2 in September of 1967. Paul was 19 and Dave and I weren’t quite 18. His patience with us was sustained by his wonderful sense of humor as he put up with our foolishness. He became a great friend and comrade through the next four years as we all worked together to make it through West Point. He will be remembered by many of us as he showed his leadership in teaching us about the importance of Duty, Honor and Country. God bless you all.

  8. Chris Clarke, LTC USA Ret. says:

I am sorry for Paul’s passing and send my condolences to his family. I did not know Paul as a cadet, but ended up rooming with him for a year at Camp Stanley near Uijongbu South Korea.

He played the same Mary Travers and Judy Collins albums every night for a year. I became a fan.

Paul was an all around good guy and a gentleman.

  9. Cecelia (Colby) O'Keefe says:

My heartfelt condolences at the loss of Paul. He was one of the “older group” of the Laliberte family so I only remember hearing about his service and his travels. For me, he was St. Anthony of Padua Family and having known his lovely parents and his siblings for so many years, I am sad at his passing and will keep him and the family in my prayers. Cecelia (Colby) O’Keefe

  10. Richard Rowe, Company C2, United State Military Academy, West Point Class of 1971

Paul was a great Cadet, Officer, and friend. Our heartfelt condolances to Paul and his family.

  11. Felicia and Edem Job.

May your kind soul rest in peace till we meet again.
