Paul Welu, 79, Detroit Lakes, MN passed away Monday, October 17, 2016 at Ecumen Rehab Center, Detroit Lakes, MN under Hospice of the Red River Valley.
Paul was born March 19, 1937 in Fargo, ND to Arnold and Jennie Welu. He graduated from Fargo Shanley in 1955. He attended St. John’s University before enlisting in the U.S. Army. He was stationed at Walter Reed Hospital where he worked in the Dental Department. He married Bernie Pedersen in 1963. To this union, 3 children were born, Wayne, Jackie and John.
He married Judy Wicklein on December 6, 1977. They made their home in Fargo, ND and Detroit Lakes, MN.
Paul was actively involved with the Knights of Columbus and Fargo Shanley GROW. One of his passions was the Roger Maris Celebrity Golf Tournament where he was famous for his fish fry tent. He loved to golf, fish and drink beer.
Paul has remained close friends with his St. Anthony Grade School and Shanley classmates for over 50 years.
He is survived by his wife of 39 years, Judy, children; Wayne (Char) Welu, Jackie (Dave) Cox, John (Tina) Welu, grandchildren; Katrina, Gunnar, Justin, Natalie, great-granddaughter, Ava, sister, Margaret Ann Eastman, brother, Jim Welu and cousin, Mary Ann Anderson.
He was preceded in death by his parents and infant daughter, Debbie Kay.
In lieu of flowers, memorials preferred to Hospice of the Red River Valley.
Paul was a friendly and caring man to work for he was missed when he retired and will be remembered . My thoughts and prayers to the family. Blessings
So sorry to hear of Paul’s passing. Wish I could attend his memorial service, but am currently out of state. My thoughts are with the Welu family.
Our sincere condolences to the family. Paul was generous, caring person who will be missed by all who knew him. Paul was also a lot of fun to golf with or just sit around and visit, very interesting person. We will certainly miss him. RIP Paul.

Paul was just a great person who enjoyed life everyday. He was always happy and always had good conversation, making a point to talk to everyone around him. We really enjoyed knowing Paul and visiting with him at Randy’s Lake Eunice area in MN . Thoughts to the family at this time. Savor the memories!
Paul was a good guy that I enjoyed working for..The lab wasn’t the same after he retired. Missed hearing his chuckle in the lab..He will be missed..My thoughts and prayers to the family.
