Ralph Engel

ralph engel

Ralph passed away on Thursday, December 18, 2014 at the Luther Memorial Home in Mayville, ND, under the care of Hospice of the Red River Valley, surrounded by his loving family.

Ralph was born on January 3, 1934, the son of Albert and Verna (Burke) Engel in Hillsboro. He grew up on the family farm near Hillsboro in the same section that was homesteaded by his great grandfather. Ralph attended school in Hillsboro, graduating in 1951. He was united in marriage to Charlotte Thompson on June 3, 1961 in Big Bend, MN. Together they made their home on the family farm where they raised their family and farmed for many years. They were proud to raise their Shorthorn cattle, grew wheat, barley, and sugar beets, and were large pork producers.

Ralph retired from farming in 1996 but remained active in the farming operation driving tractor and combine for many years. Ralph was very proud that the Engel farm continues on as the 4th generation farm with his son, Jim.

Throughout the years Ralph was a very active community member serving on the Township Board, Church Council, Crop Improvement Association, and was a 4-H leader for many years. He was a lifelong member of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Hillsboro as well as a 50 year Mason. During his retirement years, Ralph loved spending time at the lakes with his family, hunting and fishing, and always had a woodworking project in his shop.

Ralph is survived by his loving wife, Charlotte of Hillsboro; his son, James Engel of Hillsboro; and his daughter, Cheryl Carlson of Fargo; and two very special grandchildren – Danielle and Nicholas Carlson. Also surviving are his siblings - Verona (Victor) Semrad of Hope, ND; Marion (Robert) Lechner of Moorhead, MN; Larry (Naomi) Engel of Little Falls, MN; and Dale (Melva) Engel of Las Vegas, NV; several nieces and nephews; and the children and their families of his step father, Orville Wiger.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Albert and Verna; his step father, Orville Wiger; and his daughter, Stacy Engel.
