Raymond Joseph Giesinger was born on February 19, 1948 in Rugby, North Dakota to John and Rose (Schiff) Giesinger.

Ray graduated from Rugby High School in 1966, and went on to play basketball while attending Minot State University and North Dakota State University from 1967 – 1969. He started his career at the City of Fargo Engineering Department, where he worked for 46 years. He was well known and respected by many in the construction community, and he was honored to work on the Flood Emergency Crew for many flood fights in the Red River Valley.

Ray married Patricia Jenson in 1973 and they had 3 children: Jennifer, and twins, John and Marissa. He married his soulmate, Gail Buckmier, in 1996. Initially they made their home in Fargo, which included many renovation projects. In 2000, they built their dream home on Rock Lake, near Detroit Lakes, Minnesota. Ray continued to work in Fargo until he retired in 2016.

With any bit of free time that was found, Ray spent his time with family and friends. Always with a smile on his face, always ready to learn something new. He also enjoyed fishing, hunting, playing and teaching cribbage, snowmobiling, dancing, gardening, mowing, anything he could find to do outdoors. Ray enjoyed having a house full of family and friends to partake in these activities, and became known for ensuring everyone had a BIG breakfast. When they weren’t busy entertaining at the lake, Ray and Gail enjoyed traveling with both family and friends, particularly special friends Jeff and Brenda. Aside from traveling, Ray enjoyed spending time in Minnewaukan to deer hunt and “farm” with Donnie.

Ray was a sports enthusiast, his favorites included basketball, golf, and football. Most notably he enjoyed Bison football, and the Green Bay Packers.

  1. To the Family, Ray was a wonderful guy. He was neighbor to my folks. He was pallbearer fir my dad and one of the first to be there when my husband passed years ago. I’ll always remember him. I’m sorry I’m not able to attend service as I will be out of town. My thoughts and prayers will be with you all

  2. So sorry to hear of Ray’s death. Ray and I were friends in high school. We had algebra and geometry classes together with very patient Mr. Paulson. Ray and I went together to several, formal high school dances. Once he had to tie his car door shut with a rope. Many good laughs.
I wish Ray’s family and friends peace and joy as they learn to live without him. Blessings to you all.

  3. So Sorry for your loss, Ray was a great guy and will be missed. I am unable to attend on Friday as I will be out of town.
My prayers and thoughts will be with your family.

  4. Steve and Dawn Carr—-thinking of you guys and huge hugs. In memory we have donated to Hospice. ❤️

  5. Too bad that Dave, Roy, Dirk, and I could not meet with you for one more time in the basement of the American Legion. You will be missed.

  6. Ray was an extraordinary man, and he led an extraordinary life: a life, that was genuinely, well-lived! May he rest in peace, for all eternity!

  7. I hope someone from family reads this. The most obscure connection Ray and I were best friends when we were 10 and 11 in Rugby . My name is Jeff Chartrand and I was the kid from Canada. Ray and I played all sports together or better stated …I participated . I was the back up pitcher for the all star team behind Ray ,I never pitched an inning . In basketball he would score most of the points I got one all season. But the real reason to make this connection is to join all the people in his life to say ,just the nicest guy . My memories of him growing up in Rugby ,the best.
Ray had a younger sister and older brother that might remember me. Lived right next to Sheila Bush.
Rest in Peace my very good friend from 11 years old
