Fargo Business Man of over 60 Years
Richard H. J. Thurlow, age 91, of Fargo, ND died Sunday, November 5, 2005 at the Arthur Good Samaritan Center in Arthur, ND.
Richard was born December 18, 1913, in Glenfield, ND to William and Otilda Thurlow. Richard attended school in Glenfield and finished the eighth grade, and later attended Wahpeton School of Science. On January 1, 1938, he married Lizell Bragg and moved to Fargo, ND. He worked at the Fargo Foundry (now Mid America Steel) during World War II. After the war, he and Elmer Larson formed Larson & Thurlow Welding and Machine. In 1958, he started Thurlow Welding and Machine and operated it until he became ill at the age of 86.
He was the last living Charter Member of Peace Lutheran Church of Fargo. He was a life member of the NRA and Fargo Elks Club, and was also on the Advisory Board for welding at Moorhead Technical College. He enjoyed hunting, target shooting, and flying. At one time he was a licensed pilot. He spent many happy days at their cabin on Pelican Lake, which he built himself, over the past 55 years. He and Lizell enjoyed traveling to Scottsdale, AZ for a few months each winter in their motor home, where he looked forward to shooting with the Olympic and nation?s top target shooters and playing golf with his Fargo friends. Most of all, he treasured working at Thurlow Welding until he was 86 years old.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Lizell; his parents; and one brother: Lloyd Thurlow. He is survived by his children: Harry Thurlow, Fargo, Romy (Norm) Behringer, Sun Lakes, AZ, and Joel (Phyllis) Thurlow, Fargo; 7 grandchildren; and 9 great grandchildren; two brothers: Clinton Thurlow, Carrington, ND, Clifford Thurlow, Carrington, ND; one sister Hazel Nystad, Griffeth, IN; and a sister-in-law: Tillie Salsburg, Mandan, ND.
