January 26, 1931 ~ April 13, 2026

Born in: Mayville, North Dakota
Resided in: Fargo, North Dakota

Richard Workin, 95, of Fargo, ND, died peacefully on April 13, 2026, under the care of Hospice at Elim Care Center.

Richard was born on January 26, 1931, in Mayville, ND, to Ben and Alma (Olstad) Workin. He was raised on the family farm near Galesburg, ND, and graduated from Galesburg High School in 1949. He farmed for two years before being drafted into the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War. Richard was stationed at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas, and Clark Air Force Base in the Philippine Islands. He was honorably discharged in June 1953.

After returning home, he farmed for a year before attending Dakota Business College in Fargo. It was at his first job after college that he met the love of his life, Bunny Nelson. They were married on October 11, 1958, and shared 67 wonderful years together.

Richard held several jobs before beginning a long career at The Bowler, where he worked for 10 years as an accountant and 18 years as manager. After retiring in 1987, he returned to farming the family land for six years. Even after retiring from farming, he continued to stay active by working for the individual who rented his land.

Richard and Bunny loved to travel. A highlight was a family trip to Norway, where Richard was able to see his father’s birthplace and the church where he was baptized and confirmed. They also toured Europe, visiting Amsterdam, London, Paris, and Switzerland. Together, they enjoyed three memorable cruises—to the Caribbean, Alaska, and through the Panama Canal—as well as many bus trips across the United States.

He had a love for sports and rarely missed the opportunity to attend his children’s, grandchildren’s, and great-grandchildren’s events. He was an enthusiastic fan of Bison football and basketball, as well as the FM RedHawks, Minnesota Twins, and Minnesota Vikings. Richard and Bunny also enjoyed frequent trips to Minneapolis for theater productions and sporting events.

He especially enjoyed time spent at his son & daughter in law’s lake cabin.

Richard was a longtime member of the Eagles and the American Legion. He was also a devoted member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church for over 60 years. Richard and Bunny volunteered for many years with FMCT Theatre, the Fargo Theatre, the FM RedHawks, and the Medora Musical.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Bunny Workin; his children, Paul (Marybeth) Workin and Linda Workin; his grandchildren, Caitlin (Kalvin) Hoff and Evan (Rachel) Workin; and his great-grandchildren, Hudson, Henley, and Cabe Hoff, all of Fargo. He is also survived by two sisters, Francis Kyllo of Baker, MT, and Carol Baker of Bethany Beach, DE; one brother, Raydon Workin of Fargo; sister-in-law Marlys Workin of Fargo and Judi Workin of Mesa, AZ; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Ben and Alma Workin; three brothers, Marlowe (Avis), Arland, and David; two sisters, Madelyn (Hartman) Ulland and Arlene Klug (Marlin); and brothers-in-law Bernie Kyllo and Bob Baker and sister-in-law Betty Workin.

The family extends heartfelt thanks to the staff of Pioneer House and Elim Care Center for the compassionate care they provided Richard.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Bethlehem Lutheran Church or a charity of your choice.
