Rita Carolyne Amundson, 91, Walcott, ND, died Thursday, June 27, 2024, on a calm, clear, starlit night at her home on the farm in Walcott, ND, surrounded by many family members.
Rita Carolyne Priebe was born in Breckenridge, MN on December 2, 1932, to parents Benjamin and Elnora (Swenson) Priebe. She graduated from Breckenridge High School and Valley City State Teachers College. On August 15, 1953, she married Omar Amundson, and they enjoyed 62 years of marriage and adventure. In recent years she delighted in travel and companionship with loving friend and partner, Gailen Narum.
As a very special mom, she loved being around others including all kids when she worked as teacher in her earlier years and then as school playground supervisor, house parent and foster parent. She also mothered three foreign exchange students who became bona fide members of the family. The revolving doors on her home welcomed (so many!) kids, lifelong friends and many relatives, who she always remembered and cherished.
She also walked with Jesus throughout her life as her church was central in so many ways, serving as a house parent for the children of missionaries in Papua New Guinea for over four years. She was a very active member of the church in the communities where she lived, with the last years spent at the Shepherd of the Prairie parish in Walcott (aka Walcott Lutheran Church), a place Amundson ancestors helped build more than 100 years ago. The pastors became best friends and fellow members were special in her heart.
Not many are blessed to live 91 years. She wanted to live to 100, but God had other plans to bring her home. Over the years, she enjoyed many family trips, travels to six continents, holiday gatherings, special events and phone calls. She and Omar enjoyed the camaraderie of Sons of Norway with Rita becoming a 50-year member. She meant so much to so many and we all know how she made connections with everyone she met.
She is survived by her dear friend and companion, Gailen Narum; brother, Reid (Connie) Priebe; children, Twila (Greg) Hanks, Barry Amundson, Randy (MJ Dimich) Amundson, Sonja Amundson, Eric (Betty) Amundson, Monte (Lisa) Amundson, and Heidi (Richard Pearson) Amundson; grandchildren, Madeline (Justin) Lund, Ian Hanks (fiancé Kelly Breeggemann), Amber Stephens, Paul (Samantha) Amundson, Kylie (Aaron) Weatherford, Collin (Audrey) Amundson, Olivia (Tyler) Owen, Brady Amundson, Anders Pearson, and Nolan Pearson. Her surviving great grandchildren are Beckett Lund, Callie Lund, Kaylee (John Maxwell) Sanderson, Payton Taylor, Alara Amundson, Wyatt Amundson, and great-great grandchildren Lyla Collins and Will Maxwell. Also surviving are special nieces, Heidi (Gazza) Dowling and MaryAnn Amundson.
She is loved and remembered by her “foreign” children, Fr Francisco Chauvet, Asta (Paul) Hoftun Caspari, and Carlos (Gloria) Holguin.
Rita was preceded in death by her parents, brother, Lynn Priebe; husband, Omar Amundson; nephew, Robbie Priebe and infant grandson, TA Amundson.
The funeral service for Rita will be Wednesday, July 3 at 1:30 pm at Walcott Lutheran Church, Walcott, ND with visitation one hour prior.

I have so many fond memories of growing up with Rita-Omar and all the kids.
It was always so exciting to see the dust cloud from the (Mega) station wagon coming down our farm driveway on Sunday afternoons. Softball games would breakout followed by an unplanned picnic.
I will never forget the get-togethers at the Walcott farm with the entire family during holidays.
I especially remember stopping by the farm unannounced one summer and learning about their’ missionary experiences and sharing how God was working in all of our lives.
Rita, we will all miss for awhile. Surely Jesus said when He met Rita, “Well done good and faithful servant enter into the joy and presence of Your Glorious Lord.”
This note is beautiful- thank you Curtis (Twila)
Thinking of all the family as you say goodbye. – what a legacy she has passed on. Rita was my ‘hostel mum’ for two years when she and Omar were serving as houseparents in Papua New Guinea. Mothers always keep a special place of your heart, no matter how they came to mother you. So many memories – the baking, sewing, good laughs, being parented with so much love and care. Those memories extend to visits afterwards – in Switzerland, the UK and the US, and meeting several of Rita’s birthed children who accepted us without question, and keeping in touch over social media. A truly lady and forever part of my makeup.
Twila and family,
I am so sorry for your loss.
May your memories of her fill your hearts daily and see you through this very difficult time.
Sincerely
I am praying for all of you, asking that God´s love fills some of the emptiness left behind by your mom´s passing.
Jill and I send our love and prayers to the entire family. So many fond memories too numerous to mention. Fifty years ago last night Rita and Omar were guests at our wedding. We are thinking of all of you and hope you are comforted with the memories of a life well lived. Jill and Keith
Congratulations Keith and Jill!! Yes so many memories. Appreciated all the Swenson gatherings!
My American mom through 40 years is a hero for me. She knows that. I’ve told her thousand times. I know no other person able to show care for so many people around her. Unique Rita, RIP with the God you have so strong bonds to.
Solo fallece quien se olvida.
Nunca te olvidaré.

Our daughter, Lisa, married Monte Amundson in1987, and since then we have been part of many Amundson events. We spent 3 weeks with Rita and Omar when they were in Papua New Guinea (in fact we were at their home when they were being interviewed for the position they ultimately would hold). We also toured the Holy Land with Rita and Omar as well as part of Greece. Rita leaves a legacy of a life well lived, a blessing for all of us.
I only met Rita very briefly at my great uncles funeral 2 years ago. She taught my grandma when she was in school at a very young age ( I am not sure exactly) I asked her what was my grandmother like as a child and she said that she was a spunky little girl and me and my grandma thought that was funny because no one had ever described he with that word before! So now every time I think of my grandmother at a young age I think of a spunky little girl all thanks to Rita. I send my deepest condolences to her family in this difficult time.
So sad to learn about this…A wonderful woman! So good memories from a long time ago, when I was invited to Windom, Minnesota…I just have a very deep thought for all your familly, some of whom I saw again, just a few weeks ago, after almost 50 years!… My heart is with all of you !
