Robert Grangaard

Robert passed away on Wednesday, October 14, 2009 at Merit Care Pallative Care in Fargo at the age of 88. Robert was born in Kindred, ND, on March 5, 1921 to Edwood and Gertie (Transgrud) Grangaard. He grew up in that area and graduated from Kindred High School in 1938. He later attended Fargo Business College. Robert began working at Knerr Dairy before joining the service. He proudly served his country in the United States Navy from 1941 until his discharge in 1945 serving his basic training in San Diego, CA, and war time in New Zealand. After his discharge he returned to Fargo where he worked as a bookkeeper for Crane Plumbing and Heating. Robert was united in marriage to Inez Smeby on October 11, 1947, at the Congregational Church in Moorhead, MN. They made their home in Fargo until 1954 when they moved to Oakes, ND where he worked for Allis Chalmers for 22 years. They returned to Fargo in 1963 where they have lived since. Robert worked for the Moorhead Public Schools as a custodian for 9 years before his retirement. Throughout the years, Inez and Robert enjoyed camping with their family, and square dancing and ballroom dancing. He was an avid wood worker and enjoyed metal smiting. Robert was a long time member of the Fargo VFW and American Legion. Robert is survived by his wife, Inez of Fargo; his children, Kathleen (Al) Jaeger of Bismarck, ND; Wayne Grangaard of Fargo, ND; and his 6 grandchildren.
