Robert Hertwig

Robert Herbert Hertwig passed away, June 27, 2024 at Sanford Medical Center after a brief illness.

Robert was born on August 9, 1932, at the family farmhouse in Blanchard, ND. Robert (Bob or Bobby if you were from the Blanchard area), attended elementary school in Blanchard and graduated from Mayville High School in 1950. Upon graduation, Bob went into the Air Force on April 13, 1951. The 19-year-old young man from Blanchard traveled across the country – first to basic training in Texas, air craft mechanics school in Tillamook, OR, electronic school in Illinois, then to New Jersey to await his assignment, which eventually brought him to Bermuda. He was discharged in April 1955 and began working for Great Northern Railroad on May 2, 1955. He continued to work for the railroad for 39 years, retiring from Burlington Northern in August 1994.

Bob married Rosalie Lien on October 10,1964 at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Hillsboro, ND. They lived their lives in Hillsboro, building a house, and raising two daughters: Sherri and Karla.

Bob is survived by his daughters: Sherri (Dave) Schultz, Reynolds, ND, and Karla (Dan) Clark, Mandan, ND. Grandchildren: Tyler (Leann) Schultz, Woodbury, MN, Danielle (Andy) Ladwig, West Fargo, ND, Brittany (Jack) Hodorff, West Fargo, ND, and Joshua (fiancée Mariah Lund) Clark, Mandan, ND. Great-grandchildren: Maddox, Vivienne Rose, Gianna, and Beckett Ladwig, and Charlie Jo and Leni Rose Hodorff. Great Papa recently learned that a seventh great-grandchild would be born.

Bob was preceded in death by his wife of 57 years, Rose Hertwig. Siblings: Roy, Edna, Bertha, Wally, and Carl, and many wonderful brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law. He was also preceded in death by granddaughter Kaitlin Rose Clark and five great-grandbabies who are blessed to have the best Great Papa to hold them in heaven.

Bob taught each one of his family so many lessons; way too many to count. He was a lover of the outdoors, especially birds, which he fed faithfully. Country music was a staple and little kids always made him light up. As a family, we are thankful that we rarely have missed an opportunity to get together. The legacy of Bob and Rose’s love, marriage, faith, and family will carry on for generations to come.
