Bob passed away on Wednesday, December 9, 2009, at the Hillsboro Medical Center Hospital at the age of 88, surrounded by his loving family. Robert Arthur Woods was born on October 24, 1921 to Arthur and Annie (Maltman) Woods at Forest River, ND. He attended grade school and high school in Forest River and Park River Ag School. He attended one year at NDAC before enlisting in the navy during WWII. After completing his time in the service he came back and completed his education at NDSU graduating with a B.S. in Animal Science. He was a member of the Alpha Gamma Rho, which is a professional Extension Fraternity. He was manager of the Little International Livestock Show and was on the NDSU livestock judging team. Bob was united in marriage to Orella Nysveen on July 7, 1950. They made their home in Hettinger where he was a manager of the Hettinger Experiment Station from 1949 – 1953. He then became County Extension Agent at Hettinger from 1953 – 1959. He was active in agriculture and livestock organizations in North Dakota. In 1959, Bob came to Hillsboro as the County Extension Agent until retiring in 1980. He sold crop insurance for a few years after retiring, and worked as a representative for Fergus Falls Monument Co. He was active in the United Parish Church and Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Hillsboro. He was a 50-year member of the Hillsboro Masonic Lodge, Civic and Commerce Association, Kiwanis, Hillsboro Golf Club, and Sons of Norway. Bob and Pat attended many of the National Extension meetings in various cities. He received the County Agents Distinguished Service Award in 1973 . He was a life member of the National Association of County Agricultural Agents. As a Scotch – Irishman, he learned to make rommegrot from his wife’s Norwegian family and shared his goodies with many at the nursing home for years. He also volunteered at the nursing home for many years feeding residents. Bob volunteered for Hospice for a few years. He loved to visit with people young and old. He also enjoyed singing with a group of men from his church. His smile will be remembered by many. Bob is survived by his wife, Orella “Pat” of Hillsboro; his children, William (Joni) Woods of Grand Forks, ND; Mary Larson of Hillsboro; and Richard Woods of Hillsboro; his three granddaughters, Kathryn Larson, Heather Woods, and Tammy Jo (Michael) Yarber. He is also survived by his brothers, Raymond (Donna) Woods of Forest River, ND; and John “Phil” Woods of Fargo, ND; and several nieces and nephews. Bob was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Louise Dunlop; and his brother, Dallas Woods. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to the Hillsboro Medical Center or to the choice of the donor.
