Resided in: Wellington, Florida

Rodney’s service will be livestreamed below at 2:00 PM Monday, September 9, 2024:

Rodney Gnoinsky was one of the early pioneers of live streaming concerts and recording music events, both inside and outside of the studios.

Rodney was born on May 28, 1974, in Fargo, North Dakota, to Marilyn Masseth. He attended Carl Ben Elementary School, Agassiz Middle School, and graduated with the Class of 1992 from Fargo South High School. It was in high school that Rodney found his passion for music and was a member of two local bands.

After high school, Rodney moved to Minneapolis, MN, to pursue a career in the music industry. He began his career working at a guitar store in Minneapolis, and after a few years transferred to a store in Chicago where he met Jimmy Buffett.

Rodney worked as Jimmy’s personal technical consultant for the next 30 years, including broadcasting every Jimmy Buffett show live, both audio and video, and traveling the world while doing it. He was a master at using technology to enhance the lives of everyone around him.

A fabulous musician, teacher, and friend. He will be missed by his family, friends, and co-workers.

Rodney is survived by his mother, Marilyn Masseth, half-sister, Nicole Sell-Kermmoade, uncle Wayne (Jackie) Masseth, aunt Jackie Masseth, uncle Gene (Liz) Masseth, as well as many cousins, life-long friends, and his special friend, Julia.

He was proceeded in death by his grandfather Adam Masseth, grandmother Mary Masseth, Aunt Georgie Young, and an infant cousin, Megan Rossow.

Guestbook

  1. Our hearts break for you and we’re both so sorry for your loss! We will miss his visits and hearing about his adventures. He lived an incredible life doing what he loved.

  2. Marilyn, as a mother I can’t imagine losing a child. Love and prayers for comfort during this time. I know how much you both loved and cared for each other with the multiple phone calls every day. He will be missed greatly!

  3. I’m so sorry to all of the family and friends. Rodney will be deeply missed. Please take care of each other. My family will keep you in our thoughts and prayers.

  4. I will miss looking forward to opportunities. Opportunities to see Rodney when he visits Fargo, opportunities to have Rodney meet the new additions to the family (his cousin’s children) and for them to see what a rad dude he is, and whatever other opportunities may have come our way. Rodney will be deeply missed but never forgotten.

  5. I’ve known Rodney since he was a young child he and my son Casey were the best of friends. Always together and always going on adventures together. When they were in high school they started a band and were always playing and enjoying music.
I am heartbroken to hear of Rodneys passing. Rest in peace Rodney.
My love and heart is with you, Marilyn

  6. Dearest Marilyn and family….I wish I had the opportunity to know Rodney, but the loving words you chose to describe him and the full life he lived is a testament to his zest for life and the impact he made on those around him. Praying his beautiful memory and will sustain you as you navigate this newness without your sweet son, nephew and cousin.

  7. My heart hurts for you, Marilyn, ever since I heard of Rodney’s passing. As Casey’s aunt, I have known Rodney since he was just a little guy & we have laughed many times over the memory of my son, Cody, nearly running him over with a snowmobile at my mom’s farm. I was lucky to have lived in FL as I and my husband, Paul, got to share some fun times with Rodney at his home.

  8. My heart knows what you are going through. No words can mend your heart. May the Lord watch over you and send his angels to give you strength.
    Lavina and Jeff Reed

  9. My heart goes out to all of Rodney’s family and friends. Rodney and I began touring with Jimmy at the same time. It was a joy being a “newbie” with him. I will remember his kind spirit and his professionalism in “handling his business!”
    Forever Peace, Forever Light

  10. Hey all, I was one of Rodneys close friends in Wellington, and I talked to him a few days before and all seemed fine and normal. We were working on getting his studio up and running and working on getting gigs for the studio and his skills. He was a great guy, we have a ton of great times. Feel free to reach out to me.

  14. Marilyn, I don’t suppose there’s any point for me to sign the gas book. Whether you want to admit it or not, it’s my great loss too. He was my son also. I know how close you 2 were and I’m deeply sorry for you. And I just want you to know that I hurt to. His father Rod Sell.

  16. To all of Rodney’s family – he was one that I most looked forward to seeing again when going out for another tour with Jimmy and his organization. He was a wonderful companion on so many plane, van, bus, even boat (!) rides. He had just the right mixture of natural ability with humility, work ethic with sense of fun.
It hurts to lose him so young. I’m sure that he was headed for a brilliant second act.
Feeling the loss today but I’ll never forget this dear soul.

  17. Such a sad Monday.

For Rodney, I hope you are finally at peace.

For Marilyn, I hope in the coming days , weeks, months you will find strength. Strength for yourself. Strength in learning how to forgive. Strength in learning to let go of all hate.

May Rodney and Georgie be holding each other as they look down at their family today who come together to love each other at his service.

    With love.

  18. Rodney Gnoinsky,

I am so happy to have known you and proud to call you my brother and friend. We spent 28 years and countless hours together on the road talking, laughing, smoking, and debating. Your beautiful smile will be remembered forever. I loved you dearly. I’m sure you chose your forever home while peering through your telescope and that it is beautiful and comfortable. Say hi to my Dad and Jimmy for me. My condolences to your Mother, Julia and the rest of your family and friends. Rest well my sweet friend.

  19. Rodney 🕊️
    Thank you 🙏
You touched my soul in this lifetime
    I am forever grateful 🤍
Heather 💫 see you in the stars

  20. My condolences to the family. I worked with Rodney for 25 years and Jimmy Buffett. I just saw him in February as the Florida people got together to celebrate Jimmy’s life. RIP and tell Jimmy we really miss him . ❤️

  21. Rodney, thank you for always being there for us. You were a great traveling buddy on tour, at dinner, on the plane, on the bus, and anywhere we found ourselves on the unexpected road. You were always ready to help figure out some problem I couldn’t see sideways through. I will never forget your smile and easy-going, matter-of-fact focus on the simplest, most logical solution. No matter the situation, I knew things would go smoothly when you showed up. And if they didn’t go smoothly, I knew we’d share a good story and a good laugh afterward. I’m guessing that’s why Jimmy relied on you 24/7. You always knew how to make things better.

To Rodney’s dear family, I am so sorry for your loss. Please know how much Rodney was valued in our musical family. He was essential to our tour. I can’t imagine being on the road without him. I will carry his memory with me from here on out.

Rest in peace, Rodney. You will be missed beyond words.

    Jim
