Roger Lee Hustad

roger lee hustad
Roger Lee Hustad, 85, of Fargo passed away at Bethany Retirement Living on Tuesday August 10th. Roger was born on December 10, 1935 in Battle Lake, MN to Marvin and Lillian (Olsen) Hustad. He was baptized and confirmed at Trefoldighed Lutheran Church. Roger grew up on a farm North of Battle Lake. Through his high school years, he especially enjoyed and excelled as an FFA member and a baseball player. After graduation, Roger worked a short time for Northwestern Bell as a crew leader in the field. He then had a successful period of insurance sales and management with Prudential while living in Fergus Falls, Willmar, and Mankato. Roger served 6 years in the Minnesota National Guard. Farming was in his blood, so in 1970, he moved back to Battle Lake and farmed along with selling insurance and real estate until 1989 when he moved to Fargo and began his third career in auto sales where he thoroughly enjoyed building relationships with people over many years. Upon retiring from auto sales, Roger continued his “people business” work by serving as a Walmart greeter for 10 years. Roger was a very active AA member with 38 years of sobriety. He’d say the best gift he ever received was friends encouraging him to join AA. Throughout his life he was active in many service organizations including the Masonic Lodge, Chamber of Commerce, Elks, Eagles, Lions, and Shriners. Roger held leadership positions in many of these organizations. Roger was an active member of Lutheran churches in the communities he lived. Music was a part of his life as he sang in church choirs, played the guitar and entertained others playing ditties on the piano. Roger was an avid NDSU sports fan, enjoyed time at his Turtle Lake cabin fishing and pontooning, enjoyed golfing and coffee with friends, and attending many musical productions, especially the Medora Musical. Visitation will be from 1-2 pm with funeral service at 2:00, Monday August 16, 2021 at Boulger Funeral Home, 123 10th St S, Fargo. Internment will follow at approximately 5:00 pm at Trefoldighed Church at 18674 Trefodighed Rd, Battle Lake, MN.

  1. I’m sadden to read this . . . I was told two weeks ago that Rogers health was fading . . . He was a friend in my recovery over 29 years . . . I first met him in Battle Lake . . . A gifted salesmen and a friend to all!

  2. A true people person. More friends than you could count and aways willing to help whoever needed it. He was a calm cool gent who enjoyed life and was glad to share it. I met him more than 30 years ago and wish Id have known him longer. The world should have more Rogers.

  3. I work at the West Fargo Park District which is in the Rustad Recreation Center. Roger used to come in to walk almost every day. He had a great sense of humour and was full of life. He made every day better with his smile Jokes, and compliments. When Covid happened Roger didn’t come in anymore. We had been wondering about him and are so sad to hear of his passing. He was one of a kind.

  4. Saddened to read of Roger’s passing. I bought a car from Roger in the early 90’s, he was the nicest car salesman I have ever bought a car from. He never forgot me and he would always greet me with a hand shake and smile when I would see him True gentleman. RIP Roger!

  5. I met Roger when I was looking for a used car. I told him I wanted a car with all the “bells and whistles” but that I couldn’t afford new so he helped me find a beautiful used blue Cadillac that was loaded with all those luxuries I was looking for, and that was how I met this consummate salesman. We moved aw ay from Fargo 20 years ago and are moving back, and I was surprised when I saw the Forum’s announcement of his death as we’ll be there in a couple weeks, and I was looking forward to perhaps walking into a Wal-Mart one day and seeing that big smile and shaking his hand again.

  6. Good man! Always smiling, enthusiastic, and having a fun comment. Felt he was a person who could uplift those around him. Celebrate his life it was a good one. Rest In Peace. God Bless.

  7. Whether it was a visit to the car dealer; meeting for coffee, breakfast, or lunch; attending a Bison basketball or football game,; a round of golf; a pontoon ride on the lake; a day trip to a Twins game; -Roger was always a Classy Gentleman! I was privileged to be your friend! Thank You, Roger! You will be missed!

  8. I met Roger in A.A. back in Battle Lake in the 80’s, I was a newcomer back then. . He was very kind, and always had the right words to welcome new people as they came through the doors, to join our mtg.
I, and other members, will always remember him. .
    R.I.P. Riger.

  9. Whenever I went to the Walmart where Roger was a greeter, I was met with a handshake & a hug. (This was before COVID.) There were also a few words of wisdom and encouragement. His presence will be missed by many.

  10. So sad to hear about Roger passing. I was lucky to be able to visit him a week before his passing.
I’ve known him almost 20 years in Detroit Lakes in AA. What a great guy! He was a good friend and mentor.
Helped me feel more positive about life. I will miss him dearly

  11. Roger, my prayers of sympathy are with you and your family this day. You were a good person to know. I still own the last car you sold me and will think of you each time I drive, wash or work on it. Such a gift to the human community ! Your presence on earth made life better for all who knew you
