Roma Lougheed, 94, Harlingen, Texas, passed away on September 22, 2024 at home, surrounded by family and loved ones.
Roma was born at home on June 30, 1930 in Prairie View, Kansas to George and Mabel Van Der Wege. Soon after birth, she was placed in a shoe box and then placed on the oven door to keep her warm. Roma moved to Denver, Colorado with her family when she was 6 years old. During her time in Denver, Roma was active in the Square-Dancing community, even receiving awards for competitions she participated in. After graduating from high school, Roma met a handsome Canadian named Lloyd, whose brother happened to live next door. She knew he was the one when upon returning home from a date, Lloyd gently flipped her over the fence between houses while assuring that her skirt did not fly up. They were united in marriage on January 1, 1952. After marriage Lloyd and Roma moved in with Lloyd’s brother Glen and Doris Lougheed in Hillsboro before moving to their own farm just west of the “Perley gates” near Gardner, ND.
While living in Denver, Roma worked for AT&T as a secretary. After marriage, Lloyd and Roma had 7 children. Roma worked as a housewife, meal delivery to the field, pick up and delivery of needed farm machinery parts, and many other jobs to keep farm running smoothly while at the same time raising her family with Lloyd. After retirement, Lloyd and Roma remained active in the church by working as volunteers at local food pantry. Roma loved singing in the church choir, and did so for over 70 years.
Roma is survived by her sons Wayne (Cassandra) Lougheed, Ken (Laura) Lougheed, Dean (Nancy) Lougheed, and Vern (Mylie) Lougheed; her daughters Lori (Steve) Bartman, Linda (Tom) Teynor, and Jean (Clay) Serbin; 29 grandchildren; 36 great-grandchildren; as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband Lloyd; grandson David Lougheed; parents Mabel and George Van Der Wege; sisters Irene, Vivian, Helen, and Mary Lou; and brother John (Dick).
We would like to thank Yolanda at Vicki Roy Home Health Service and care takers Dora, Julissa, Sanjuana, Nancy, Paloma, Gracie, and Magda whose help we are forever grateful for.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to the Immanuel Cemetery in Hillsboro: St. John’s Lutheran Church, Cemetery Fund, PO Box 99, Hillsboro, ND 58045

So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen, since what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal. -2 Corinthians 4:18 (NIV)
We have such sweet memories of Roma ❤️as we spent many holidays with her discussing life … and because of her we will forever enjoy “Clock Watcher’s salad”. ☺️
A great soul never dies. Remember her, and she will be with you always bringing you together again and again.
