Ruby passed away on Friday, September 27, 2024, at her home in Fargo, surrounded by her loving family, under the care of Hospice of the Red River Valley.

Ruby was born on May 11, 1933, in Anoka, MN and graduated from high school in Ogilvie, MN in 1951. She was one of nine children, and her parents were Edward and Ruby (Howell) Nordenstrom.

Ruby would grow up being the ‘glue’ of the siblings, just like her mother, bringing her family together whenever she could and making sure everyone knew she loved them. Growing up on the farm, Ruby and her sisters, Lorraine and Elaine were the ‘caretakers’ of their two baby brothers, Morrie and Spike, while the other four brothers, Ed, Larry, Henry, and Al were serving in World War II. That love and care for her siblings was a constant throughout her life…always making sure everyone was doing ok and knew they were loved.

Ruby moved to Fargo in 1958 and began her long career in the business community where she owned several salons in the area. Ruby married and had three children, David Larson, Susan Larson-Maack, and Merle Miller Jr. Ruby was blessed with seven grandchildren and ten great grandchildren with two more on the way. Ruby moved to California 1980 and met her future husband, Ted Lyman and spent the last 31 years of her life loving the man that brought the kind of love and joy she dreamed of. They would become business partners, serve together at their church, loved entertaining at their home, traveled the world and loved on their kids and grandkids. Her happiness and comfort were always a priority to Ted, and he brought her the true love and companionship she desired thus earning him the famous name….my Teddy Bear. Equally Ruby had her own set of nicknames she was affectionately called…RJ, Ruby Joyce, and the best one…Foxy RJ. Just like her license plate says, Foxy RJ! She was always dressed for success and her sense of fashion was as alive and bright as she was.

Ruby was a woman with a hunger for God and possessed the kind of faith that just spilled out to everyone she loved and met. One of her favorite things to do was to gather at her sister Elaine’s farm with as many family members as could fit in the living room and praise God together. Her brothers Morrie and Spike, and nephew Justin would play their guitars and entertain us with their songs of worship. Everyone sang and Auntie Elaine was always right there to harmonize with her brothers and Ruby would smile from ear to ear with pride for her family. From being Homecoming Queen in 1951 to the day she passed, Ruby possessed a positive attitude and shared it everywhere! The entire world is waiting for people like Ruby to love them.

Ruby is survived by her husband, Ted Lyman of Fargo, ND; her children – Susan Maack of Fargo, ND and Merle Miller of Long Beach, CA; her grandchildren – Joshua Magnusson, Timothy Magnusson, Debra Stratton and Ryan Maack, Erica Miller, and Michael Miller; her 17 great-grandchildren. Also surviving are her step-children – Catharine Asay, Kimberly St. Charles, Matthew Lyman and Allison Lyman; her sister, Elaine Alexander and several other very dear relatives, including nieces, nephews and friends.

Ruby was preceded in death by her son, David Larson; and her siblings, Edward, Larry, Henry, Al, Lorraine, Maurey, and Marlyn “Spike”.

  2. We love you and excited for your next journey in Heaven. Your faith was so beautiful just like you. Thank you for all your love! ❤️

  3. My condolences to you Ted. So many memories of Ruby in her capacity and support of entrepreneurial women in the Inland Empire (Riverside) for the “For You Network.” Best memory: Ruby tandem jumping from the airplane for her 70th birthday! She was a joy to know!! RIP!

  4. God bless you, Ruby. I will always remember your kind smile and loving nature. You lived such a full life and impacted so many. I am so grateful and honored to have had such an amazing second mother like you.

  5. Ruby,
Thank you for always being so kind and loving to myself and the kids when we visited your home. You always loved entertaining and made everyone of us feel welcomed and loved. My favorite funny story of a family gathering was when I was drinking my Diet Coke Ruby was asking (telling) me to quit drinking it because it had formaldehyde in it. I told her I drink it so when I die they have less work to do. She replied “oh Danya that is terrible” and laughed still while telling me how bad it was for me. Loved being at your wedding to Teddy Bear. Thank you for loving me and the kids. Danya

  6. My Dear Ted, and family.
Ruby was an extra-ordinary Woman of God,,full of love and compassion. She was my first boss in sales for con-Stan Industries, and shared Jesus with me in many of our conversations. Surely she has a Crown with many Rubies on it because of who she was and her love for Jesus Christ. .Many seeds that she planted has grown into beautiful fruitful trees, and continue to bear fruit around the world to this day.
Rest in peace my dear Ruby. May His light continue to shine upon you and all the many hearts that were touched for Jesus because of you, including mine. I will continue to carry your mission of planting seeds for Jesus just as you taught me.
I know we will see each other again in our eternal life that God has promised us.
Thank you Ted for taking such good care of my dearest friend Ruby. She loved you so much. She left a great Legacy for her children and grandchildren and all future generations, and all of her friends.
Blessings to you Ted and her beautiful family.
