Russell Dean Koenig, West Fargo, passed away on January 8, 2024, at the age of 65 at Sanford Health in Fargo. Born on October 24, 1958, in Jamestown, North Dakota, he was the beloved son of Robert and Anne Koenig.

Russell led a remarkable life that touched the hearts of all who knew him. After graduating from Oak Grove High School in 1977 where he earned two state championships in Wrestling. He pursued his academic and athletic endeavors at Minnesota State University Moorhead, participating in both wrestling and football.

In his professional life, Russell embraced new opportunities during the oil boom in the Dickinson/Belfield area, before eventually returning to Fargo. He worked at St. Luke’s Hospital. It was during this time that he encountered Sheri Fjelstad at Red River Lanes in North Fargo, and they soon began writing a love story that would last a lifetime. Russell and Sheri were united in marriage on June 15, 1991, at St. Benedict Catholic Church in Wild Rice, North Dakota. They made their home in West Fargo.

Russell’s work at Sanford Health spanned an impressive 26 years, where he diligently served the community with compassion and professionalism. Simultaneously, he also contributed 25 years of dedicated service to UPS. His strong work ethic and commitment to his chosen professions left an indelible mark on all those he worked alongside.

Outside of his professional pursuits, Russell had an unwavering love for sports. He could often be found cheering on the NDSU Bison Football team, as well as avidly supporting the Minnesota Vikings and the Minnesota Twins. Russell also cherished his moments of tranquility, finding solace in the company of his beloved puppy, Molly. He reveled in the simple joys of being outdoors, particularly spending time on his front porch, engaging in heartfelt conversations with anyone who crossed his path. His ability to connect with others and genuinely show interest in their lives was a testament to his caring nature.

Additionally, Russell was passionate about giving back to the community, regularly volunteering at Dakota Boys Ranch. He recognized the value of hard work and found fulfillment in both his personal and professional endeavors.

Russell is survived by his wife Sheri, West Fargo; sons Michael, West Fargo, Alex, West Fargo; twin brother, Robert (Julie) Koenig, Murray, Kentucky; mother and father in law Jack and Carol Fjelstad, Horace, ND; and brothers and sisters in law Dave and Nancy Torgerson, Kindred, ND, and Brian and Susan Fjelstad, Papillion, Nebraska; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his mother and father and grandparents.

Russell’s final act of kindness was to donate his corneas for the benefit of others upon his death.

  6. Whenever Russ and I crossed paths he always made me feel like the most important person in the room. So soft spoken, and so in tune with others and remembering the most minute details. He was a sponge and one of the most genuinely kind people I knew. From RR lanes where I bartended with “Big Rick” circa 1988-1991 to seeing you over the years in the OR at Meritcare, then at St Bens….I feel blessed to have been in your orbit for over 30 years. You never failed to remember a face. I recall our last conversation at St Bens when you told me about the diagnosis. You thanked me for the gift of music. Well, your final gift speaks to me; you made a difference in life, and when you no longer needed; you paid the Gift of Sight forward. If you had been able, I know you would have given much more. Rest in peace Russ, I will miss seeing you around. My donations to Giving Hearts Day will go out in memory of you.

  7. Russ was a classmate in high school. For all the success Russ had in football and wrestling he was very humble and unpretentious. He was a hard worker and I remember being so proud of Russ, and the Solwold brothers when they won State Championships in wrestling. Russ could get along with anybody and everybody. I really enjoyed his laugh. I haven’t seen Russ much since we graduated, but when we did have the chance to talk or run into each other it was like we were still in high school. It is wonderful to hear and read how he has impacted so many lives.

  8. Hi Robert – not sure if you’ll remember me – Jane Morse from Casselton – Jane Olson now. Russ and I got reacquainted when they were members of Lutheran Church of the Cross in West Fargo. I was so glad he approached me and that he even remembered me. He was such a kind soul. My heart goes out to you and all of Russ’ family. Being a twin, I’m assuming you’re feeling a deeper loss. God’s peace to you all.

  9. Sheri my heart just breaks for you! He was such a great guy and will be deeply missed! You are all in my prayers for comfort and healing.
    Elly and Tim Holland

  10. So sorry to hear about your loss Koenig family. I worked with Russ for many years and knew him as a patient in the chiropractic office. Russ was a genuine human being, humble and funny and unpretentious. I am better for having known him.
