Shirley Ann Lund passed away peacefully on May 8, 2026, at Bethany on University in Fargo, surrounded by the love of her family. A private family burial will take place at 11:00 AM on Tuesday, May 12, 2026, at Riverside Cemetery in Breckenridge, Minnesota.
Shirley was born on December 29, 1936, to Harold and Martha Polfuss on the family farm. She was one of three daughters, and growing up alongside her sisters filled her childhood with laughter, friendship, and love. Life on the farm shaped Shirley into the strong, hardworking, and dependable woman so many knew and loved.
She attended school in Hankinson and graduated from Hankinson High School in 1953. After graduation, Shirley moved to Wahpeton, where she worked at the drug store on Main Street. It was there that she met her future husband, Merlin Lund. The couple married on February 16, 1957. They welcomed their family in Wahpeton before moving to Fargo in 1966 during the historic “Big Storm.”
After settling in Fargo, Shirley began her career with Northwestern Bell Telephone Company, where she worked faithfully from 1966 until her retirement in 1992. She came out of retirement and worked at the General Office of Stop-n-go Stores for 13 years. Shirley was very organized; she always believed there was a place for everything. She somehow managed to keep life running smoothly, no matter how busy things became.
Shirley found joy in the simple things in life. She loved playing bingo, cards, and being part of card clubs with friends. She also cherished quiet moments spent reading. But above all else, Shirley’s greatest joy was her family. She never missed the chance to support her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren at their sporting events and activities. Whether it was baseball, basketball, or any special moment worth celebrating, Shirley was always there in the stands, cheering proudly and wholeheartedly for the people she loved most.
She was a devoted wife, a loving mother to her three daughters, a proud grandmother to six grandchildren, and a treasured great-grandmother to seven great-grandchildren. Shirley’s strength, kindness, and unwavering love for her family will be deeply missed, lovingly remembered, and forever carried in the hearts of all who knew her.

Karen and I send our love, thoughts, and prayers to you with the loss of Shirley.
