On March 7, 1945, in Bremen, ND, Francis and Adeline Dusek Arendt welcomed the baby they named Emily Marie. Emily was baptized at St. Joseph’s Church in Bremen and attended Bremen Elementary School. Soon after her graduation from St. James Academy in New Rockford, she entered the Presentation Sisters in Fargo. In March of 1964, she received the religious habit and a new name, Sister Mary Andrea. In 1971, she made profession of perpetual vows.

Sister Andrea attended Sacred Heart Junior College and NDSU. She graduated from the College of St. Catherine with a baccalaureate degree in nursing. Her wholistic approach to healing led her to enroll in clinical pastoral education at St. Luke’s in Fargo and to complete a master’s degree in pastoral studies at Loyola University in Chicago. For a total of 12 years, she ministered as a nurse in hospitals operated by the Presentation Sisters and in Sacred Heart Convent Infirmary.

She filled administrative and liturgical positions in the Sacred Heart Parish Community of East Grand Forks for 10 years. During these 20-some years, Sister Andrea also served her religious community in leadership roles and as a member of governing boards of sponsored institutions. She continued to develop her penchant for and considerable talent in the arts– music (organ, piano, vocal), visual art (drawing, environmental) and dance. Never a performer, she directed her time and energy toward the enhancement of communal prayer and liturgy.

In 1993 she was assigned to Presentation Prayer Center through which she conducted numerous retreats and days of reflection. She served on the governing board of Retreats International and was instrumental in establishing the practice of Taize’ Prayer in the area. Sister Andrea taught many sessions of FM Communiversity and worked closely with interfaith and ecumenical groups. Women’s organizations and faith communities often invited her to guide retreats and give presentations on issues relevant to fostering growth in holiness. She also taught a class in spirituality at the YWCA Emergency Shelter, volunteered in Befriender programs and organized a conference for church office workers.

Sr. Andrea was a spiritual director and contributed to the training and mentoring of other practitioners of this art. She wrote columns and articles on faith and faith-related issues for church bulletins, agency newsletters, the Fargo Forum and the Journal of Ideas, Arts and Activities. In 1992 she received an Arthur J. Schmitt Foundation Scholarship and in 2008 was named YWCA Woman of the Year in the Faith Community Category.

Her calm, listening presence was a balm to the soul in distress and a tonic to many on their faith journey. She will long be remembered for her ability to empower others to share their gifts in building communities of support and mutuality.

For the past several years her physical stamina and communication ability were assailed by Parkinsonism. She faithfully endured this trial until death completed her way of the cross on Holy Saturday, April 4, 2026, and she danced home to celebrate Easter with the Risen Christ.

Sister Andrea was preceded in death by her parents; her sister, Jean Dryness; and her brother, Larry.

She is survived by her brother-in-law, Ralph Dryness; her sister-in-law, Nancy Arendt; as well as nieces and nephews and the Presentation Sisters and Associates.

In lieu of flowers, monetary donations are preferred to the Presentation Prayer Center or any entity of your choosing.

Memories Timeline

Guestbook

  1. What a blessing was our dear Sister Andrea to the many of us whose life she graced. I expect that she is now “leaping for joy” with her streamers.

  2. I was so fortunate, as a Benedictine Sister, to live with Sister Andrea for nine years in East Grand Forks.
We prayed the liturgy of the hours together every day – sometimes the Presentation way, and sometimes the Benedictine way. She was often an inspiration to me, and we often had some very good talks about many things, as well as having lots of fun together.
Living and working with Sr. Andrea and Sr. Eugenia Tessier was one of the highlights in my life.
    I will be forever grateful.
Sister Mary Weidner, OSB (from St. Benedict’s Monastery in St. Joseph, MN.)

  3. Sister Mary Lou, Geraets says:

Dear Presentation, sisters and family of Sister Andrea,
Or deep empathy at this time, of course sorrow and joy regarding the death and glorification of sister Andrea, a beautiful person. We look forward to being with her again when it is our turn to see Jesus.
    With love, peace and prayer,
    Sisters, Mary Lou, and Ruth
    Geraets

  4. I am thankful to Sister Andrea Arendt for being a mentor and companion in the ministry of spiritual direction. She was my supervisor for my practicum in spiritual direction in order for me to obtain a Certificate in Spiritual Direction and a Masters in Christian Spiritual from Creighton University. She was also a member with me in our Supervision Group for Spiritual Direction for several years. I thank God that Sister Andrea helped me to grow closer to God and helped me to help others grow closer to God through spiritual direction. I pray that she may contemplate the beautiful vision of the Holy Trinity in heaven, the glory of the resurrection and eternal life, and all the delights of heaven.

  5. My deepest sympathies, to all the Presentation Sisters sisters and Associates and her countless friends. Andrea was a bright beautiful light. Whenever I came to the convent she always welcomed me with joyful open arms. Among her many talents, she had an incredible green thumb! All the flowers at the convent were just beautiful. Reflecting the love and joy that she put into them. I’m grateful, that she had become part of my life. May you all find peace and knowing that her spirit is now one with God. Love Juli Foy

  6. Grace and peace! In the year of 2003 or thereabouts, Fr. Jerry Rogers suggested that I invite Sr. Andrea as a facilitator. Two parishes were going through difficult stages of consolidation. I accepted his suggestion and to my delight Sr. Andrea agreed to prayerfully address the topic of consolidation. All the issues of grieving were beneath the surface among the people who gathered during that “difficult” day. While I do not recall her parable stories woven within her reflections, I continue to remember that her direct and gentle prayerful spirit dominated our sessions. I had never known her before that day.
I pray that she is now dancing with joy and gladness wth Jesus, Mary and Joseph and all the saints in glory. Just as our Hebrew ancestors danced and gleefully sang the psalms, Sr. Andrea is jumping with joyous delight. Thank you, Sr. Andrea, for your spiritual guidance, conviction of faith and radiant smiles. Alleluia! Praise be Jesus!

  7. Dear Sisters of the Presentation, I learned of Sr. Andrea’s death several days ago and wanted to extend my prayerful sympathy. when I lived with you in the years 1997-2000, Sr. Andrea was most gracious in helping me adjust to your customs and traditions! she modeled your wonderful, loving hospitality with Christ’s love and attention. I treasure those few years I became acquainted with all of you! I watched parts of the Mass, disappointed that I could not get sound, but how wonderful to note so many of you as you gave your farewell to Andrea. May Sr. Andrea know the loving welcome of the Risen Christ, Peace be with you as she rejoices in his presence. sincerely, Sister Susan Lardy, Bismarck Benedictine
