Steven P. Lunde

Live Stream

Steven Paul Lunde, beloved father, grandfather, brother, uncle, cousin, and friend, passed away peacefully on November 6, 2025 at the age of 76. Steve’s life was marked by kindness, warmth, and a deep love of community.

Steve was born November 3, 1949, in Detroit Lakes, MN, the second of five children to Stanley and Eldora (Stende) Lunde. He grew up on a dairy and grain farm east of Ulen, MN, where he learned the value of hard work and service. With that foundation, Steve graduated from Ulen High School in 1967 and went on to attend Fergus Falls Junior College.

From a young age, music was a creative outlet for Steve; he was drawn to music and performing. The Lunde home was filled with music and his most joyful moments were spent around the piano singing with his family. Steve began singing at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Ulen. As he grew more comfortable and confident, he performed in choirs, musicals, ensembles, and solos throughout his high school and college years. In the early 1970’s, Steve taught himself to play the guitar and he performed regionally with the bands “Mr. Dynamite and the Boogie Boys” and “Burlington”, where he also showcased his talents as a singer and a trombone player.

In 1978, Steve married Connie (Bates). When Stanley and Eldora built a new home across the road, Steve and Connie moved into the Lunde home on the farm where they raised four children: Emily, Marcus, Thomas, and Jonathan. Steve farmed for a time with his father and brother-in-law, Mike Lockhart, worked as a Unit Advisor with Lutheran Brotherhood, and sold seed to local farms with Dahlgren & Company. Steve loved nurturing the land and operated the family-owned “Henhouse Greenhouse” for several years in rural Ulen.

After farming, Steve built a successful career as a Realtor in the Red River Valley later co-owning and managing RE/MAX Realty 1. Steve approached his work the same way he approached life, with integrity and a genuine interest in the community and the people he served. He formed lasting bonds with clients and colleagues, where he was known for his expertise, warmth, and professionalism. Steve served as the President of the Fargo-Moorhead Area Association of Realtors and was recognized with the Distinguished Service Award and Lifetime Achievement Award from RE/MAX. With his years of service, he enthusiastically mentored new Realtors, to include his star student, his middle son Tom.

Steve found immense joy in music. His pure tenor voice graced countless choirs over the years. Whether performing formally or singing among family and friends, he shared his gift generously. Steve was a passionate supporter of local music and a proud member of the Master Chorale of Fargo-Moorhead for nearly 30 years. The Master Chorale was an important part of his life, and he proudly invited family and friends to concerts to share in his joy of singing. Steve continued to share his love of music as a member of the Messiah Lutheran Festival Choir for many years. His energy and love of music was infectious. As the end of his life neared, his lifelong appreciation of music offered comfort and a familiar connection to others and his past.

Above all, Steve cherished his family. He took tremendous pride in his children and grandchildren, celebrating every milestone and offering constant encouragement and love. He proudly attended every sporting event, concert, and program to support his children and grandchildren. He built memories through numerous family trips and proudly reminisced while pointing out locations on his oversized map of the world. As a grandfather, he brought laughter, warmth, and stories that will live on in the memories of his grandchildren. He was legendary for his evening “pop-overs,” where he would sugar up the grandkids, crank their energy to maximum, and then make a quick getaway – leaving their parents to start the bedtime routine all over again. His wisdom, steady guidance, and unconditional love shaped the lives of his family.

Steve moved into the enhanced assisted living at Lilac Homes in Dilworth, MN in November of 2024. At Lilac Homes he was an outgoing member of a closeknit community where he received exceptional care from many nurses, caretakers, and staff as he battled Alzheimer’s Disease. In April 2025, Steve began receiving support from HIA Hospice who provided comfort and compassion to Steve and his family.

Steve’s legacy is one of warmth, kindness, and song. He leaves behind a community that will deeply miss his voice, his presence, and his love. His voice, his laughter, and his spirit will echo lovingly in the hearts of all who knew him.

Steve is survived by his family. His four children: Emily (Mark) Moench of Fargo, Marcus (Alicia Goodthunder) Lunde of Redwood Falls, MN, Thomas (Jayme) Lunde of Fargo, and Jonathan (Jessica) Lunde of Elizabethtown, KY. His grandchildren: Vance Moench, Andrew Moench, Anistain Lunde, Kolby Lunde, Robert Halvorson Jr., Reese Regnier, Landon Halvorson, Brody Halvorson, Luella Lunde, Luca Lunde, Lennox Lunde, Graham Lunde, and Harrison Lunde. His siblings: Carol Lockhart, Collene (Ed) Anderson, Ann (Duane) Shane, Alan (Christine) Lunde. His nieces and nephews: Jeff (Sommer) Lockhart, Jean (Rob) Schwartz, Seth (Randi) Anderson, Cara (Nick) Herzog, Ingrid (Adam) Johnson, Rebecca (Kyle) Jorgenson, Benjamin Shane, Rachel (Brian) Guler, Eric Lunde, Ellie (Peyton) Rohloff and numerous great nieces and nephews, cousins, foster siblings, and many dear friends and colleagues. He is also survived by aunts Arlene “Bub” Nygaard and Marilyn Nygaard.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Eldora and Stanley, brother-in-law Mike Lockhart, and infant granddaughter Isla Grace Lunde.

Memories Timeline

Guestbook

  1. I am so sorry to hear of Steve’s passing. God Bless all of you. He was a great man. Take care.

  2. I’m so saddened to hear this news. He was such a saint of a man — kind, compassionate, and genuine to his core. I had the privilege of serving in volunteer leadership under him more than 20 years ago, and he remained one of the finest leaders and mentors I’ve ever known. We stayed in touch through the years and always shared the best conversations. My heartfelt condolences to his family and loved ones. He will be deeply missed, and the mark he left on our industry—and on everyone lucky enough to know him—will never fade.

  3. So sorry for your loss! Beautiful pictures and memories of a wonderful man!

  4. Steve is one of the nicest men I’ve ever known and had the pleasure to work with. What a beautiful family he has. Godspeed Steve.

  5. Dave and Ilene Ouradnik says:

We were sorry to hear of Steve’s passing. I always enjoyed working with Steve in the real estate industry. We often compared notes with Steve as the realtor and myself as the lender. Always had a smile and was a very positive guy. RIP Steve…

  6. I remember Steve from Messiah Lutheran sang in the choir with him . Enjoyed his guitar Sympathy to the family at this time Steve was a great guy

  7. So sorry to hear of Steve’s passing! He was a man I met as a young person in Devils Lake in a leadership role and farmer and ended up as my realtor in Fargo in 2019. A great and honest person! Rest in Peace!

  8. Dear family of Steve Lende…it was with sad hearts we learned of the passing of your wonderful Dad and Grampa. We didn’t know he had been battling dementia, so it was quite a shock.
We wanted to tell you we loved and respected Steve. His integrity and kindness, honesty and goodhearted nature were always refreshing in our friendship. He worked hard at his job, and found a home we fell in love with for our six years in Fargo. As we reflect on his life, it reminded us of the promise Jesus made, when he was leaving this world, to his disciples; that He was going to prepare a place for us, that where He was, we could be also. When we think of your dad, helping people find good, suitable, and delightful homes, he understood this part of Jesus’ promise; that a good future home is one you look forward to, and makes your move more comforting. Now Steve has moved ahead of us, to our Eternal Home, enjoying rest from his labors, reunion with loved ones, and delight in the gifts of Heaven. You are torchbearers now, of the Light and Promise of Jesus, to share with this troubled and constantly moving world of people, that Jesus prepares a place for them, when they trust Him for salvation. May the comfort of peace be yours. We can see from the slide show of pictures how much Steve loved all of you!! “How great the Father’s love for us! How vast beyond all measure! That He should give his only son, to make a wretch (that’s us) His treasure!” This hymn describes God’s love for each of you, graciously shown and lived by your earthly father, in Steve’s exuberance, creativity, honesty, compassion, and deep love!
    God be with you.

  9. I’m heartbroken to hear the news of Steve’s passing. Steve was one of the nicest persons I ever knew. From the time we grew up and went to school together in Ulen, Minnesota, he was always thoughtful and considerate of others. He was also a fantastic singer. Now he sings in heaven’s angelic choir. Until we meet again my lifelong friend, Godspeed.

  10. We knew Steve well, as he helped us secure our Fargo home and later supported our son and his family in purchasing their first home. My last office location in Fargo was in the same building on Westrac where Steve’s real estate business was headquartered, and I had many pleasent visits with him there. He was a fine man, and we extend our condolences to his family.
    Larry & Linda Borlaug

  11. Sympathy to all the Lunde on his passing he use sing in the festival choir

  12. When returning back to our home state of North Dakota from Colorado 15 years ago, we were fortunate and blessed to purchase our home in West Fargo from Steve. He was everything you would want in a realtor…kind, honest, humble, friendly, fair, caring, and much more. How could you not like Steve? He was engaging and had a wonderful sense of humor. We hit it off immediately as we shared stories of our personal and family athletic experiences.

We kept in touch off and on over the past 15 years and it was always a real joy to connect again and again. He was always Steve…never changed…the same much loved man I really liked and admired so much.

Rest in eternal peace, good friend!

  13. Very sad to learn of Steve’s passing. He truly was a kind and generous gentleman. He thrived in real estate because of those traits. It was always a pleasure to work with him. May his memories be for a blessing.

  14. When I retired from UND and was considering moving to Fargo, a friend recommended Steve as my realtor. He was incredibly patient in showing me houses. One day he excitedly said he had the perfect house for me, and it was exactly what I was looking for. Over those four months of house hunting, we became friends and discovered we had a lot in common: farmers’ sons, Lutherans, and a love of singing. He encouraged me to join Messiah Lutheran, to join the church choir, and he recruited me to become a member of the Master Chorale. He was warm, genuine, and empathetic; you just wanted to be around him. I’ll miss his humor, friendliness, and that beautiful tenor voice. Rest well my friend.

  15. The tenor section was the best in Master Chorale!! The tenors stood behind us sopranos! Didn’t know him well but spent a good amount of time in rehearsals and concerts together. So sorry for your family’s loss.

  16. What a wonderful person always positive, upbeat, with a big smile and heartfelt greeting. Steve was always a pleasure to work with. Sure miss him. May God give him eternal happiness.

  17. Mark and Sandy Asleson says:

Sandy and I have been keeping your family in our thoughts and prayers today. We wish we could have attended the service but we are out of town. I have many, many of Steve and the whole Lunde family. I especially remember singing with him in the choir and admiring his vocal talent.

  18. My cousin Steve was tall, handsome, and my hero. He gently protected me from the menacing cows in the barn so that I could climb the ladder to the hayloft. He was thoughtful of others in so many ways, even the little ones like a little girl afraid of a cow.
We are sorry to have missed being with all of you for the funeral. God’s Word provides the comfort we need: “For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so them also which sleep in Jesus will God bring with him.
For this we say unto you by the word of the Lord, that we which are alive and remain unto the coming of the Lord shall not prevent them which are asleep.
For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first:
Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord. Wherefore comfort one another with these words. I Thess. 4:14-18

  19. Carolyn (Schneidermann) Cyr says:

Sending my condolences and heartfelt sympathy to the Lunde family. I have many memories of Steve singing at Bethlehem in Ulen and in the community, farming near my parents and my uncles farms, going to the Henhouse Greenhouse, and babysitting Emily, Marcus, Tom, and Jonathan. He sang beautifully at our wedding which we so enjoyed having him come down to do. I’m sure he’s singing with the heavenly angels now and putting on quite the concert!
