Surjeet’s service will be livestreamed below on Tuesday, January 28, 2025
Surjeet Kaur Sarpal of Fargo, North Dakota, passed away peacefully at home at the age of 87 on Tuesday, January 21, 2025, surrounded by her loving family.
Born in Calcutta, India, on September 23, 1937, Surjeet was the daughter of Kanwar Jaswant Singh Jassal, a successful businessman, and Harbhans Kaur, a devoted homemaker. She grew up in a large family, where she learned early on the values of love, resilience, and adaptability that would define her life.
At the age of 21, Surjeet embarked on the journey of a lifetime, traveling to Jalandhar, India, to meet her husband of 64 years, Lakhbir Singh Sarpal. Together, they built a life filled with adventure, moving to London, England; Belfast, Ireland; Saskatoon, Saskatchewan; and ultimately settling in Fargo, North Dakota, in 1991.
Surjeet’s remarkable ability to adapt and thrive in diverse cultures was a testament to her strength and resourcefulness. She was a self-taught baker, cook, gardener, seamstress, and Sudoku enthusiast—a woman of immense ingenuity and creativity. Her adaptability and unwavering resilience carried her family through life’s many challenges, and her strength was an anchor for all who knew her.
A devout and deeply religious woman, Surjeet was a pillar of the Sikh and Indian community in Fargo. Her home was not just a place to live but a vibrant hub of hospitality, where countless celebrations, afternoon teas, and family gatherings took place. Surjeet had a special gift for making everyone feel welcome, offering newcomers a sense of belonging and warmth, and fostering a community that reflected her own generous spirit. Her friends spanned the globe, and her kindness left an indelible mark on all who had the privilege of knowing her.
Surjeet is survived by her children Rajbir (Kristin) Sarpal, Harsharan Sarpal, and Sona (Tony) Diocee; her grandchildren Anjani (Adam) Traeger, Harneal Diocee, Milan Sarpal, and Mia Diocee; her great-granddaughter, Xenia Sarpal; and her siblings Amrit Kaur Rikhraj, Harbhajan Kaur Jassal, and Avtar Singh Jassal. She is preceded in death by her beloved husband, Lakhbir Singh Sarpal, and her parents.
Surjeet’s life was a masterclass in strength, love, and connection. She taught us to open our hearts and homes, embrace life’s challenges with resilience, and cherish the moments that truly matter. Her warm smile, loving demeanor, and unwavering spirit will be deeply missed but forever remembered.
Surjeet Kaur Sarpal’s memorial service will take place on Tuesday, January 28th, at 1 PM at Boulger Funeral Home, 123 10th Street South, Fargo, ND 58103, followed by a procession to the Boulger Crematorium located at 321 27th Circle S, Fargo. You were very important part of every stage of our life-kid’s graduation, wedding, grandkid’s birthdays and so many more events. You were loving, kind poise, elegant, welcoming, full of wisdom, accepting, eager to learn new things, resilient and list can go on and on but not enough words to describe you. We are going to miss you immensely, you will remain in our memories always. May your soul rest in peace🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏
Dear Surjeet ji,
We can’t believe that you are not longer among and with us but our fond memories together will always be with our family. Our daughters did not believe when we told them about you leaving this mortal world to join loving Doctor Sahib.
Our many years together in Fargo and the most recent visit to Minneapolis for Indu’s retirement will remain with us forever. We know you are now resting in peace.
Our heartfelt condolences to the family and FM community. We wish we could join the last moments together but God wished it otherwise because of some injury in Indu’s right hand. Om Shanti Om.
mamiji,
