St. Therese of Lisieux said, “The world is thy ship and not thy home.” Susan has lived her life with her feet firmly and actively living out her Catholic faith in this world while keeping her soul set on the journey to Heaven.

Susan’s ship set sail February 26th, 1954 when she was born to Bernard and Mary Franzen in Devils Lake, ND. She grew up, the third of ten children, learning the importance of hard work on the farm near Lakota, ND. After graduating high school, Susan moved to Fargo where she attended North Dakota State University to earn a bachelor’s degree in Home Economics. During her time at NDSU, Susan was very active at the Newman Center. On the heels of the Roe v. Wade decision, Susan steered her ship into the tumultuous waters of the pro-life movement. Her involvement in the campus pro-life group is where she met her future husband, Larry Richard. With the group, they traveled around, speaking, educating, and advocating to help others understand the value and dignity of every human life.

Larry and Susan joined their ships on this journey at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Lakota, ND on June 5th, 1976. Shortly after, Larry and Susan moved to Larry’s family homestead, where they took over the farm in 1980. Larry and Susan’s pro-life work never wavered as they started their family and operated the farm through the difficult farming years of the 1980’s. Over the next 12 years, they welcomed four children into their family, Jackie, Alex, Rebecca, and Elisabeth. Because of her love for the unborn, Susan was instrumental in opening and operating Fargo’s crisis pregnancy center. In 1994, she diligently worked as the director and as a counselor to women and men who found themselves in crisis pregnancies and in need of support. Her ability to speak the truth of the dignity of each precious soul and her willingness to find support and resources for those in need helped countless mothers and fathers choose life for their children. After serving in this role for nearly a decade, she stepped down as director and into the position of developmental director of the First Choice Clinic, as it was then called. In this role, her attention to detail and dedication to the work served her well; she put together fundraisers and brought about awareness and support for a clinic that truly impacted the lives of parents and their unborn children. Through these years, Susan worked hard to lovingly raise her family and support her husband. Her deep faith in the love of Jesus Christ and her devotion to His mother, Mary, were the source of her strength.

In 2010, Susan entered the waters of retirement as busy as ever supporting Larry on the farm, loving her grandchildren, caring for her impressive flower pots, and participating in many activities at the church. Friends and family’s doorsteps were made more beautiful with her generous sharing of the flower pots that she lovingly crafted. Her hospitality was second to none and her famous homemade buns were enjoyed by all. Susan’s immense devotion to prayer throughout her life has been felt by many, but especially her family, for whom her faithful witness through good times and bad has been a beautiful example. Her ship reached its final destination with family near her on October 12th, 2023. Leaving her family behind was hard, but the promise of her eternal reward gave Susan a joyful purpose as she faced the suffering she endured.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Bernard and Mary Franzen, her niece, Kimberly Cook, and several miscarried grandchildren. She is survived by her husband, Larry, and her children and grandchildren, Jackie and Jimmy Dulka (Grace), Alex and Mary Richard (Ethan, Olivia, Alaina), Rebecca and Josh Scraper (Gabby, Julianna, Jacob, Greta), Elisabeth and Nick Schmitz (Stephen, Sebastian, Joachim, Genevieve, and Baby arriving in December). She is also survived by her siblings; Marie Pozarnsky (Dennis), John Franzen (LuAnn), Robert Franzen, Bernadette Adams, Charlie Franzen (Kris), Lisa Potts (Jim), Jessica Skjordal (Randy), Ted Franzen, Joe Franzen (Brandi), as well as many nieces and nephews.

Memories Timeline

Guestbook

  1. Susan will be missed here on earth but Jesus and Mary needed her home to take of all those children. God’s Will, nothing more, nothing less, nothing Else.

I am so sorry for your loss. I pray your memories of her provide some comfort in these difficult times. We will be thinking about you!

    Regards,
    AS

  3. Our family is saddened by your loss, but grateful for the loving friend we were blessed with.
Susan had a sparkle that radiated to everyone in her midst.
It was evident she was a vessel of God’s love.
God bless your family as you grieve her absence on earth.

  4. Sue and Larry are soooo precious to me, I learned so much from Sue watchomg/listening to her. I stayed with th while I was pregnant with my daughter in 1984….Sue, I love you so much 💗 XXOO

  5. Alex, Mary and Family,

Janelle and my thoughts and prayers to you, and your family at this time. May your mother rest in peace.

    Tom and Janelle

  6. So sorry to hear of Susan’s death. So many years ago, we both had young families and were active in all things St Benedict. Our church family was much smaller then and we were able to get to know so many. We watched children grow and leave. Those we knew at the start leaving or passing on. Nothing remains static. The news of Susan’s passing struck at the very heart of those early years. All the choir fun we had. I wish for you peace and strength at this time and please accept my sincerest condolences. Linda Hohertz

  7. I only met Susan once, but was going to UND with Jackie at the time. I realized at once that Jackie had many of her mother’s characteristics: their genuine love for others, honesty, and a great sense of humor – so I feel a bit of your loss. I am certain those who knew her well will never forget her.

  8. I only knew Susan for a short time but will always remember her kindness. She will be missed. Rest in peace.

  9. We send our love and prayers. A faithfully servant of Jesus and Mary has gone home. She is greatly missed. Listening our condolences,
    Mike and Kathy Skroch

  10. I will certainly miss Susan at daily Mass and Friday devotions. She was a true spiritual example . I have known Susan and Richard for some years. Her presense in the community will also be missed. “May the Angels Welcome Her to Paradise” well deserveing servant.

  11. I am so very sorry to hear of Susan’s death. May she be embraced lovingly in the arms of Jesus who has accompanied her closely all her life. I offer my sincere condolences to Larry, their children, grandchildren and all who knew and loved Susan.
May you find great peace in all your memories and the love never stops! Love, Peg Maloney, RSM

  12. Susan was such a welcoming person!! I was shocked to hear she had passed away. May God reward her for all the sunshine and calories she shared with all of us. May her family be surrounded by love and prayers to get through this trying time.

  13. We’ll miss Susan; she always welcomed
us to her home and had time to visit.
Susan is home now, leaving life here
On Earth and entering Eternal Life. She
    Is in Gods care forever.

  14. Our condolences to Susan’s family. We pray as time passes the joy of your memories will replace the pain of your loss. I miss my Adoration partner so dearly. She was an inspiration to Jill, Madeline and me every day. She made the world a better place with her courage, faith, and love of others. We will remember her in prayer always.

  15. Susan will be missed at church and in the community. I was blessed to have known her through Sts. Anne & Joachim. She was a true spiritual example of how we should all live.

  16. My heartfelt sympathies to Larry and the family. Rest in peace dear Susan. You will always be an inspiration.

  17. I remember Sue well from her time at the NDSU Newman Center.
May she rest in the Peace of Our Lord Jesus Christ.
Prayers for Larry, children and grandchildren.

  18. Larry and Family,
