Fargo, North Dakota
Theodore (Ted) Martin Scherr, son of Peter and Frances (Streifel) Scherr was born June 1, 1944, in Rugby, ND. He died on Tuesday, April 2, 2024, just shy of his 80th birthday. Ted was raised in the home of his parents in southern Pierce County, ND. His father was a rancher who tended to a large herd of cattle while his mother tended to the family farmhouse.
Ted, and seven siblings – four brothers and three sisters – spent little time on sports or other extracurricular activities. They kept busy helping with the family cattle business when the school bell rang. Though he may not have realized it at the time, those long days working cattle would one day pay off as he climbed the corporate ladder at Dakota Drug.
Ted embodied having a strong work ethic in everything he accomplished, especially throughout his career. Aside from being the president and CEO of Dakota Drug, in 2014 he was elected as Chairman of the Healthcare Distribution Management Association, now renamed the Healthcare Distribution Alliance. He was reelected as chairman in 2015 and remained on the HDA Board of Directors.
Ted worked at Dakota Drug for 58 years, owner for 26 of those years. By his side was his wife, Mary (Axtman) Scherr. They were united in marriage on October 23, 1965, and in 2023 they celebrated 58 years. Mary and Ted made their home in Minot, ND, where they raised their two daughters, Kim and Cindy. In 2005 he and Mary moved to Fargo, ND.
Ted and Mary enjoyed woodworking and crafts. Ted also enjoyed traveling with his wife and family, completing jigsaw puzzles, and was an ice cream connoisseur. He was a faithful member of Sts. Anne & Joachim Catholic Church in Fargo. He was an active member of the Knights of Columbus of both Fargo and Minot, ND. While in Minot, he was also a member of Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church.
Ted is survived by his loving wife, Mary; daughters, Kim (Mike) Schaefer of Fargo and Cindy (Jim) Edwards of Minneapolis; 5 grandchildren, Danielle (Jake) Lunde of Fargo, Matthew Edwards of Minneapolis, Jared (Georgie) Schaefer of Bottineau, Jacy Edwards of Minneapolis, and Eric Schaefer of Fargo; great grandchildren, Ellie and Emerson Lunde of Fargo; sisters, Helen Niess and Audrey Williams of Minot; and brother, Don (Edie) Scherr of Bismarck; sisters-in-law Marcella and Gloria Scherr, both of Minot, and Delilah Scherr of Rugby; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Victor, Kenneth, and Tony Scherr; sister, Mary Duchsherer; brothers-in-law, Bennie Duchsherer, Edward Niess, and Ron Williams; and niece, Brenda (Scherr) Cunningham.

So sorry for your loss!
My deepest sympathies to you and your family.
So very sorry you lost Ted. Prayers for the whole family.
Cherish the memories.
Our deepest sympathies. Always enjoyed visiting with Ted and Mary when in Minot.
Our condolences on Ted’s passing. We had known him from the Optisource group several years ago. He was such a nice man and we enjoyed his company on many occasions. We especially enjoyed Mary, his wife, and had many good conversations with both of them. So very sorrow for his loss. Our thoughts and prayers to Mary and his family.
Hugs to Maryann Kim and Cindy. My thoughts and prayers are with all of you during this difficult time
Rest in Peace Uncle Ted
I send my condolences to all family members for Ted’s passing. Our thoughts and prayers are with you.
Prayers and Condolences to all in the Ted Scherr family.
Back in the early 1900’s, Great Great Grandpa Anton Scherr traveled a lot of the same paths in North Dakota with Peter and Mary Eva Eisenzimmer. Anton married my Great Aunt Maria Eisenzimmer.
They were all very instrumental in building and maintaing both Balta ND churches.
Special condolences to Mary Ann as we went to the same “one room” country school at Brazil ND.
My Mom was her Santa in country school.
R.I.P. cousin Ted Scherr.
Prayers and thoughts are with you all at this difficult time.
This is quite late but Teds OB wasn’t in the Minot paper. So sorry about your loss and miss you at your Minot sale.
