Thomas Raymond Salzwedel, 55, passed away peacefully on January 16, 2026, at Hillsboro Sanford Hospital. He was born December 6, 1970, in Long Beach, California, to Monte and Betty (Pendell) Salzwedel. The family returned to North Dakota when Tom was four years old, and he grew up in Cooperstown and graduated as class salutatorian in 1989 from Cooperstown High School.

Upon graduation, he attended the University of North Dakota (UND) and worked at various businesses in Grand Forks. He graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Economics degree from UND in 1999. He moved to Fargo and began working for U.S. Bank for many years, followed by a career with Noridian Healthcare Solutions. Tom completed a second Bachelor of Science in Information Technology Management in 2015 through the University of Mary’s Fargo campus.

Tom married Misti Wuori on July 15, 2012, at Holy Cross Catholic Church in West Fargo, North Dakota. They moved to Hillsboro, North Dakota, where Tom was a member of St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church, and attended church with Misti at Hillsboro United Parish. Tom was active in St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church as a Lector and an Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion for home-bound parish members. He was also a member of the St. Rose of Lima Knights of Columbus. Tom was very devoted to his Catholic faith and read many books related to his faith.

Tom found he loved cats through his marriage to Misti, and was cat dad to Gracie, Bindi, Earl Grey, and Smokie. He loved to grill and do most of the cooking for the couple. Tom was an avid UND Hockey fan, as well as an avid reader. Tom and Misti loved to travel and visited Seattle, Portland, San Diego, Las Vegas, South Carolina, Rhode Island, Maine, Vermont, New Hampshire, Michigan, Winnipeg, Black Hills, Medora, Duluth, and more.

Tom is survived by his wife, Misti Wuori, Hillsboro, N.D., his parents, Monte and Betty Salzwedel, Fargo, N.D. He is also survived by sister-in-law: Anita Adams (Paul) of Bismarck, N.D., sister-in-law: Cathy Edin of Staples, M.N., brother-in-law: Mike (Dawn) Wuori of Driscoll, N.D., aunt: Cherrie Lum of Durango, C.O., aunt: Debbie Reilly of Mountain, N.D., aunt: Kay Siebenforcher of Oceanside, C.A., as well as his dear cousins. He was proceeded in death by his grandparents and numerous aunts and uncles.

The family would like to thank Sanford Hillsboro Medical Center staff, Roger Maris Cancer Center staff, HIA Hospice staff, and many others in the Hillsboro community who took such amazing care of Tom through his health battles with brain tumors and appendix cancer over the past nine years.

Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church. The Funeral Mass will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, January 24, 2026, at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Hillsboro, N.D. Livestream will be available at: www.boulgerfuneralhome.com.
