Thomas D. Holter “Toby”
Thomas “Toby” Holter, 76 years old, passed away on Friday April 26, 2024, at Northwest Medical Center, Tucson, AZ.
Toby was born on October 9, 1947, in Minneapolis, MN to Harold “Harry” and June Holter. Toby grew up in Minneapolis and graduated from Roosevelt High School in 1965. Toby received his BA in Business and Personnel Management from the University of North Dakota in 1970.
Toby married Barbara Savageau in Fargo on August 23, 1969. They raised their 4 children: Nicolle, Matthew, Cory, and Tony in the Fargo-Moorhead area.
Toby started his career as an auditor for Modern Merchandising, and later was transferred to Fargo as the Assistant Manager of the newly opened LaBelle’s store. Later he worked as a credit manager for Bristol Distributing. Toby completed his career as carpet representative for Shaw Industries, covering ND, Northern SD, Eastern MN, and Southern Manitoba.
Toby had many passions which included: sports, music, genealogy, and wildlife photography. Toby played softball and was on the Board of Directors for Fargo Slow Pitch Association. He coached football at Mayville State University and was a volunteer coach for Fargo Shanley and Fargo Davies. He enjoyed traveling to Australia to be a part of the coaching team representing North Dakota at the Down Under Bowl. Toby always said his favorite job was driving school bus for Richards Transportation Service Inc. The kids always looked forward to his music on the bus and “Fire-Up Friday.” In the summers, Toby was bus driver and counselor for the Camp-A-Day Program in Fargo. Christmas Eve was a special time for Toby, he never missed an opportunity to play Santa Claus and deliver gifts to family and friends. Nothing brought him greater joy, even in his final weeks, than listening to Matthew and The 4GENTS.
Toby is survived by his wonderful wife of almost 55 years Barb, Green Valley, AZ; Children Nicolle (Richard) Aukland Fargo, ND; Matthew (Tori) Holter, Tucson, AZ; Cory Holter, Fargo, ND; Tony (Sandy Venckus) Holter, Moorhead, MN; Grandchildren Dylan (Lindsey Vangsness) Hughes, Robin Holter, Journey Hughes, Nick Aukland, Kellen Holter, Charlotte Holter, Rosie Holter, Gus Holter, and Juniper Joy Holter. Toby was preceded in death by his parents Harry and June, brothers-in-law Paul and Jim Savageau, James “Itts” Williams, and sisters-in-law Phil Williams, Jan Fadell, and Mitzi Savageau.
Toby loved and dearly missed his 4-legged friends Holly, Socko, Brit, Reggie, Rudy, and Yoshi.

I have so many memories of Toby. His love of family, photography, adventure, and music stand out. But his Santa was the best! He brought so much joy to the children at the orphanage in Nogales, Senora. Children, rescued from the streets, captured the wonder of believing for a day. The only tears were from the volunteers who watched Toby work his magic. RIP Toby.
Loved Toby to pieces and was one of our biggest fans and quite possible a behind the scenes 5th Gent of the 4GENTS. He often hoot and holler at our performances, had good constructive criticism of our performances, great musical selections for us to try as he was a veritable encyclopedia of Doo Woo. We will miss you, a lot! I hear the music is great in Heaven. Keep rockin’
Favorite memory of uncle Toby, is coming to their house for Christmas and Thanksgiving, sitting on his lap and him letting me take a sip of his beer. He was an awesome man.
