Timothy “Tim” J Klontz, 92, passed away peacefully Tuesday, November 21, 2023 at the Fargo Veterans Administration Hospital.
Tim was born April 5, 1931 in Cummings, North Dakota, the fourth child of John V. and Helen R. (Fritz) Klontz. He spent his early years in Cummings before moving to Fargo with his family in 1943. Tim graduated from Sacred Heart Academy in 1949 and then proceeded to serve his country during the Korean War as a member of the United States Army stationed in Germany from 1952 to 1954.
After his discharge from the Army, Tim earned a degree in Graphic Arts from Wahpeton State School of Science, graduating in 1958. He then started a career in printing which took him to various regional cities including Aberdeen, Duluth, and Minneapolis. In 1971, Tim returned to Fargo working for The Fargo Forum as a dedicated compositor until his retirement in 1993.
Tim had a wonderful and warm demeanor that endeared him to all those who had the pleasure of knowing him. He had a strong work ethic, commitment to quality, and meticulous attention to detail. Dedication to his craft was evident in every project he worked on which made a lasting impact on the world of printing.
Outside of his professional accomplishments Tim enjoyed spending time outdoors hunting, golfing, riding bike, and going for a good walk. He was also a dedicated reader and a baseball fan with the St. Louis Cardinals being his favorite. Always timely, he enjoyed a good meal and spending time with family for any occasion.
Tim is survived by his brother-in-law Willard Hebert and will be fondly remembered by his nephews, nieces, extended family, and dear friends. He was proceeded in death by his parents John and Helen, brothers Mayo (Sandra) and Lloyd (Chanis), sisters Virginia (Edward), Mary, and Madonna (Donald). A special thank you to all of the staff of the Fargo Veterans Administration Hospital for the wonderful care given to Tim.

I hadn’t really known Tim for an awfully long time but I sure enjoyed the time we did get together. I’m very glad that I did get the chance to know him and will miss our lunches and POLITICS!! Rest Well Tim – you did well!
I met Tim at Ralph’s Corner Bar in 1990. We found out we lived just one block away from each other. We enjoyed shooting pool, golf, watching football and sharing meals together. On his many walks, he would stop by to pick up my dalmation to accompany him. Tim was kind, fun loving, caring and compassionate. He loved to talk about current events and sports. After I married Mike, Tim was happy to share his time with my husband as well. This past summer we just made it to Taco John’s before they closed in Fargo. We also enjoyed a picnic with him at Island Park. He cherished his family and all his neices and nephews and talked fondly of the many friends he had over the years. We will miss our good friend Tim.
Tim was such a kind warm person to visit with. I truly enjoyed listening to him sharing stories of his work in the printing world. I am so honored to have known Tim.

Uncle Tim was a sweet man. While I was the manager/bartender at Rooter’s Bar, he would stop in several nights after his shift at The Forum & buy a bag of popcorn for the trip home. On Saturday night, he would always bring me the Sunday paper because it had the ads. He’d trade it for a bag of popcorn! He & I agreed that dessert was the best part of any meal & we never said no to it! He welcomed me as a niece from Day 1 after marrying into the family. I will always love & appreciate his love & kindness. 💕
I met Tim through my friend Cindy (Hubbard) over 30 years ago. We enjoyed many visits, sharing humorous life stories, golf outings, live music events, and sharing good food with good company. His vitality was rather amazing into his mid-80’s with his walks and bike rides (often 60/130 blocks in duration – especially when a sports team other than his Cardinals were playing poorly). Despite many life and health changes since that time, he managed to keep living his life on his terms. He valued family and friends – building new connections by being genuinely interested in others and the world around him. I will miss my good friend Tim Tim the Elder Him.
I was in AMVETS last night and saw a note about Tim’s passing. I was so sad to read this and so sorry I missed his service by only a couple of days, I would have loved to have paid my respects so I will do it here. I had not seen Tim for a couple of years, but I have such fond memories of many many many nights chatting with him at AMVETS since our meeting in 2012. We kept in touch sending Christmas cards each year, I am sorry I didn’t keep in touch with him more. He was so kind and very caring.
My thoughts are with your family Tim. I hope you are wearing one of your soft sweaters and may our paths cross again one day. Much love as always, Samantha McCarthy x
I met Tim in 1966 at Miller Publishing in Minneapolis as I started my career in the printing business as an apprentice. We worked together for 14 months until he talked me into leaving the publishing business and taking a job in a trade shop. It turned out to be a good decision. Tim and I remained friends all these years since. We played golf when I paid him visits in Fargo and when he would visit my wife and myself in St. Paul. We wish we would have known of his passing as we would have made the trip to Fargo. I talked to him a couple days after he fell in his kitchen for the last time. I called Tim a week or so after and didn’t get an answer so I left a massage but he never called back so figured something wasn’t right so I decided to check the obituaries and was sad to see my longtime friends face. We are very saddened. RIP Tim
My condolences to the Klontz family on the passing of Tim from a Canadian Cousin.
