Travis John Tuinstra, 64, of Moorhead, Minnesota passed away peacefully on November 11th at home under the care of hospice with his family and four pets at his side.

Travis was born in Pipestone, Minnesota on July 8, 1960, to Marvin and Jonny Tuinstra. He grew up in Verndale, Minnesota and graduated from Verndale High School in 1978. Travis married his high school sweetheart, Julie Rose Barr, in May of 1980. Travis graduated from Alexandria Technical College in 1980 with a degree in computer programming. They moved to Fargo, North Dakota where Travis started a job at Kiland’s office systems. Not long after their favorite son, Joseph Tuinstra, was born in 1981 followed by their first daughter, Jennifer Tuinstra, in 1984 and second daughter, Laura Tuinstra, in 1992. Together they built their first home in Mapleton, North Dakota and raised their family there until 1999. The family enjoyed camping, trips to the North Shore in Duluth, Minnesota, and spending holidays together. Travis and Joe enjoyed hunting and fishing together. Travis taught Joe how to drive and how to shoot. Travis taught Laura how to ride a bike and the importance of saving money.

Travis re-married in 2003 to Michele Rainsberry and they made their home in Mapleton, North Dakota. They both worked together in IT for many years at several Fargo businesses. They enjoyed motorcycle runs with their friends in Bikers United, camping, movies, gardening, classic oldies music, and going to concerts. They traveled to Easter Island on their honeymoon and to Dallas, Texas to see a Paul McCartney concert.

Travis suffered a massive stroke in 2013 during a work meeting. At that time, he was working for Sanford and was surrounded by medical staff who were able to act quickly. Travis spent many long days in the hospital and worked incredibly hard in therapy and was able to regain some mobility and strength to walk again. He continued to work for Sanford IT in Fargo, North Dakota before being forced to exit the workforce.

Travis lost his wife, Mic, in late February of 2024. He missed her dearly and was ready to be reunited with her again in heaven. There they can ride again along the streets of gold awaiting the lord’s eternal kingdom. Our family is grateful to know that Travis is finally at peace. We will miss him every day. His memory will live on in the hearts of all those who loved him.

Travis was preceded in death by his wife, Michele ‘Mic’ Tuinstra, his father, Marvin Tuinstra, and grandmother, Vera Cox.

Travis is survived by his mother, Jonny Tuinstra, siblings, Roy Tuinstra, Karla Richardson, Billy (Cindy) Tuinstra, and Mike (Jill) Tuinstra, son Joe (Nikki) Tuinstra, daughters, Jennifer (Sarah) Larson and Laura (Chanz) Senger, step-daughters Danielle Rainsberry and Emilie Rainsberry, grandchildren, Justin Tuinstra, Hunter Tuinstra, Jacob (Mckenna) Radebaugh, Autumn Radebaugh, Hayley Johnson, Waylon Senger, step-grandchildren Jaxen Rainsberry and Ellisen Rainsberry, neice, Haylee Tuinstra, and loving pets Eva, Cali, Whiskey, and Meanie.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held on Friday, November 15, 2024, at 2:00 pm at Boulger Funeral Home in Fargo, North Dakota. Friends and family are welcome to arrive after 1:00 pm to gather and reminisce before the memorial service. After the service there will be a reception with light snacks and refreshments.

Memories Timeline

Guestbook

  1. My dear brother, you will be so missed. You had the kindest heart and a great sense of humor. I am so thankful I could spend so much time with you these last months. You are now free from the constraints of your body that frustrated you so, but you always strived to do the best with a positive attitude. I love you forever. Rest in peace little brother – until we meet in heaven again

  2. Our sincerest condolences to Travis’s family. Although we hadn’t seen Travis in many years I always remember that he was very kind and friendly and funny at school and on our visits on the school bus. Our prayers are with his family. RIP Travis. Class of “78”

  3. Sincere sympathy for your loss. Many years were spent together at Verndale High School. Travis was always a quiet presence in our class with his classic wit. He always made sure he came to our class reunions to see old friends. Rest in peace Travis. VHS Class of ‘78.

  4. Travis…many sweet memories of you come to my mind and the first time I got to see you in the summer you were born…another nephew to enjoy & be a “helper” to your Mom for the four summers I came out from Virginia. You were precious from the start & you continued with that personality all your life. You have always been thoughtful of others & it was a special way you made visits to your Grandmother Vera through the years & brightened her days with your visits & your frequent phone calls to chat with her. I appreciated especially the words you spoke at her funeral service. I know that the two of you are enjoying your Heavenly Home together & am thankful you are healed and with Mic again.

  5. My Sincere condolences for Travis’s family and friends. Travis may be gone from our world, but not from our hearts. Travis was a great classmate. He was my first friend when I moved to Verndale.
Because we were friends Travis came over to our farm where we hunted, did a sleepover and he educated me about diabetes. Travis was smart so it’s not surprising he was a computer programmer.

The grief and sorrow will pass in time however our love and memories we had for Travis will never fade away. May God’s love and grace be with you all during this difficult time.

  6. We are so very sorry to hear of Travis passing!
We have many good memories of motorcycling with him and Michelle with Bikers United group.

    Our condolences,
    Roberta and Brian Stoelting
