Vance Smelden

The Funeral Service for Vance Smelden will be held 10:30 Monday, March 24, 2003, at the Hillsboro United Parish UCC-UMC Church. Visitation will be on Sunday from 4 - 6 PM with a prayer service at 6 PM in the church. Visitation will also be one hour prior to the funeral in the church on Monday. Burial will be held in Riverside Cemetery in Hillsboro. Vance died on Thursday, March 20, 2003, at the Hillsboro Medical Center Hospital at the age of 60.
Vance Caron Smelden was born on April 14, 1942, near Larimore, North Dakota, the son of Hans and Veronica (Caron) Smelden. He grew up in this area and graduated from Larimore High School. After his schooling he proudly served his country in the Unites States Marine Corp from 1965 until 1967. After his discharge he attended college at North Dakota State University in Fargo and graduated from Valley City State College in 1972. Vance was united in marriage to Joyce Crotty on February 8, 1975, in Hillsboro. They made their home in Hillsboro. He worked for Powers Construction on the missile sites; for Concrete Inc, in Grand Forks; and began with the Traill County Highway Department in 1981, where he was currently employed. Vance also owned and operated Smelden Construction in Hillsboro. Vance will be missed by everyone whose life he touched. He is remembered as a loving husband, devoted father who loved watching his sons playing sports, neighbor and friend, and a "hard nosed Dolphins fan."
Vance is survived by his loving wife Joyce of Hillsboro; his sons, Adam and Brian Smelden both of Hillsboro; his sister, Marrion; and his brothers, Lyle and Glen; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers, Bill and Stan; and his niece Stephanie Crotty.
