Verle passed away on Wednesday, January 11, 2023, at the Hillsboro Medical Center, surrounded by his loving family.
Verle Sharris Peterson was born on November 12, 1939, the son of Stewart and Velva (Hill) Peterson in Wales, North Dakota. He grew up on the family farm and attended a rural school in Moscow Township as well as Langdon, ND before moving to Hillsboro.
Verle was united in marriage to Sandra Sorum on May 5, 1962, in Hillsboro. They made their home in Hillsboro where they raised their son, Dana. He worked for Farmers Union, later known as Cenex, for over 42 years.
Verle will be remembered for his quick wit, ability to write poems and songs and his musical talent. He enjoyed playing in the band The Roadrunners. Verle had a deep love for animals and was rarely seen without a video camera in hand to document his grandaughter’s childhood. His kindness and willingness to help others will never be forgotten. Verle’s greatest joy was spending time with his granddaughters, singing, laughing and creating memories.
Verle is survived by his wife, Sandy of Hillsboro; his son, Dana (Paula) Peterson of Harwood, ND; two beloved granddaughters – Hallie and Andie; his sisters – Marlene Hanson (Fargo, ND) and Lavon Peterson (Hockessin, DE); and his brother, Lanny (Joanne) Peterson (Park River, ND). Also surviving are many very special nieces and nephews and many other very dear relatives and friends.
Verle was preceded in death by his parents and grandparents; and his infant brother, Stewart.
Verle’s family would like to extend their deepest appreciation to the staff at the Sanford Hillsboro Medical Center for their outstanding care.

Oh my…. This hits home pretty hard! Verle seemed as the-closeness of a brother to me! So sincere & caring ! I so enjoyed being in The Roadrunners Band with him and mainly listening to his great guitar playing & him singing. I think of it as “He’s joined Dad & Bev in the band with Buddy & Mon dancing to their country music”! I’m very grateful for the wonderful memories I have of Verle!! God Bless you, Sandy & family, at this difficult sad time! Love Marvyl🌺❤️
I will forever treasure memories of Verle. He made life joyful, and I am lucky to have spent some time with him. I can still hear his voice and his laughter. Sandy, Dana, and family, I am thinking of you and wish you comfort. We will all miss Verle dearly.
When my sister and I were very young, before Dana was born….. Verle and Sandy … my mom (playing piano) and dad….and other musical friends would gather and “jam”. Our home(s) were filled with music, joy, and laughter. Verle played guitar and sang as naturally as he breathed. Bethany and I, as little girls, fell asleep the sounds, laughter, and safety of these fantastic musicians and friends. Dana (my little brother) came along and our families were that much more enriched.
Sandy, Dana, Halie, Andie, Paula, and everyone in Hillsboro, I send my love. How lucky were we all to have had Verle in our lives. We are truly blessed. I love you all.
Sandy, Verle was such a nice guy! He will be missed. Prayers for you and your family.
Our thoughts are with you and your family. So sorry for your loss.
